A Brief Examination of Q-Bitz, an Educational Game for Children

For a few years now educational games have been released by numerous companies as studies have demonstrated that children learn much more easily when the way in which they are learning is entertaining, and let?s face it, there aren?t many things more entertaining than a game out there.

MindWare is a company which has achieved a reputation over many years of providing some fun and educational games for children. One of their most highly-praised toys is Q-Bitz, and here is a brief overview of what it is.

What is Q-Bitz

To sum things up in a nutshell, Q-Bitz is a game in which two to four players compete against each other to replicate the shapes they see on challenge cards using their own building blocks. Each player has a wooden tray with 16 cubes, the sides of which are painted with varying motifs.

The first player to replicate the shape on the challenge card he or she has drawn gets to keep that card.

There are over 120 cards available for the game, and the one who has the most of them at the end wins. The game was intended for children of ages 8 and up.

Q-Bitz as an Educational Game

While at first it may be hard to see it as an educational game, Q-Bitz contributes to developing something other than the traditional academic skills so many games are geared towards nowadays. In order to thrive in this world we need to make use of a large number of abilities, and a very important one to consider is visual awareness and dexterity.

Q-Bitz helps players to develop those aspects as they are required to identify the necessary blocks and match then with the shape presented as fast as possible. In addition, they also learn to work under a lot of stress and pressure, something which may come in very handy in the future.

What People Think About it

While it is true that there is more than one source to look at when determining whether or not the game actually sets out to do what it is advertised to, Amazon reviews remain one of the most trusted places as it is guaranteed that most people who place the reviews there are indeed real customers who are only sharing their opinion. Out of the 31 people who reviewed it, 20 gave 5 stars and 11 gave 4 stars.

Nobody gave less than that, meaning there is a good reason to believe that this is indeed a high-quality product that actually delivers. If you would like to, I encourage you to have a look for yourself at the reviews and make sure that they do not point out any outstanding flaws with the game... although ruining a game consisting of wooden trays, blocks and cards is quite a challenge.

Global warming winner: Once rare butterfly thrives

Global warming is rescuing the once-rare brown Argus butterfly, scientists say.

Man-made climate is threatening the existence of many species, such as the giant polar bear. But in the case of the small drab British butterfly, it took a species in trouble and made it thrive.

It's all about food. Over about 25 years, the butterfly went from in trouble to pushing north in Britain where it found a veritable banquet. Now the butterfly lives in twice as large an area as it once did and is not near threatened, according to a study in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

Decades ago, the brown Argus "was sort of a special butterfly that you would have to go to a special place to see and now it's a butterfly you can see in regular farmland or all over the place," said study co-author Richard Fox, an ecologist at Butterfly Conservation, a science and advocacy group in the United Kingdom.

Global warming helping the brown Argus is unusual compared to other species and that's why scientists are studying it more, said study co-author Jane Hill, a professor of ecology at the University of York.

Biologists expect climate change to create winners and losers in species. Stanford University biologist Terry Root, who wasn't part of this study, estimated that for every winner like the brown Argus there are three loser species, like the cuckoo bird in Europe. Hill agreed that it's probably a three-to-one ratio of climate change losers to winners.

As the world warms, the key interactions between species break down because the predator and prey may not change habitats at the same time, meaning some species will move north to cooler climes and won't find enough to eat, Root said.

"There are just so many species that are going to go extinct," Root said.

What makes the brown Argus different is that it found something new to eat, something even better than its old food, the less common rockrose plant, Hill said. The new food is a geranium and it is more widespread.

"It's almost like the whole of the buffet is now open to it," Hill said.

Samsung UN55ES8000F

It's fun to experiment, but the nature of experiments is that they don't always work. Samsung performed a few with its new high-end LED LCD HDTV, the ES8000F series, and the results are, at best, inconclusive. The 46-inch ES8000F uses several new control options like voice control, motion control, and touchpad control, to reduce the number of hardware buttons. The result is a $2,999.99 (list) HDTV with an impressive design, a solid, if not perfect picture, and a handful of novel control options that don't always work. It still comes with a conventional remote control, which works fine?but you shouldn't have to rely on it after you've spent so much money on a TV that isn't supposed to need one.

Editors' Note: This review is based on tests performed on the Samsung UN46ES8000F, the 46-inch model in the same series. Besides the screen size difference, the 55-inch $3,749.99 UN55ES8000F is identical in features, and while we didn't perform lab tests on this specific model, we expect similar performance.

Design
The UN46ES8000F certainly looks striking, with a very thin black bezel framed by silver. The base is a wide support made of two curved, metallic plastic arms. It keeps the screen steady, but it doesn't pivot. The inputs sit on the right back edge of the back panel. You get three HDMI inputs, three USB ports, and an optical audio input facing right, and component, composite, VGA video, cable, Ethernet, and analog audio inputs facing downward. Most HDTVs this size have four HDMI ports, and having only three can be a problem if you have more than one game system along with a set-top box and Blu-ray player. A small joystick behind the right edge of the panel lets you navigate different menus without the remote.

The most notable aspect of the UN46ES8000F is its Smart Interaction interface. Besides a conventional remote and menu system, it can use a touchpad Smart Touch remote, as well as voice control and motion control. If you want, you can use the HDTV entirely like a normal screen, but with practice you can have it responding to your voice and gestures.

The Smart Touch remote is the most "normal" of the new control choices. The small, rectangular remote has only a small handful of buttons and a large touchpad area for controlling on-screen menus and cursors, which work with certain apps like the Web browser. It's a nice concept, but the touchpad area is flanked by two clickable button areas that activate menus for conventional remote controls, such as color buttons and bringing up the on-screen remote. It's very easy to accidentally click either of those areas instead of the touchpad itself to register a menu click, which brings up new menus you didn't want instead of entering the information you wanted.

Voice and Motion Controls
A camera and microphone array sits on the top edge of the HDTV, enabling voice and gesture controls. The Smart Touch remote also has a microphone you can activate with a button to control the HDTV?by speaking into the microphone instead of at the screen. The voice controls respond to either "Hi TV" or "Smart TV," depending on which you prefer. When you summon the controls with the set phrase, a small list of commands appears at the bottom of the screen. This isn't Siri or Dragon Naturally Speaking, though; you need to enunciate carefully, and you can't speak too fast if you want the HDTV to recognize your commands. With practice, though, you can turn the HDTV on and off with your voice, which is a nice feature.

The camera also allows gesture controls from the user. By waving your hand in front of the screen, a cursor appears that you can control with your motions. Making a fist "clicks" the cursor, letting you navigate the menus and Web pages. Like the voice control, it's not completely useful on its own. The screen takes a few seconds to recognize that you're waving to move the cursor, and unlike the remotes, it doesn't allow quick access to common menus and commands.

Questions from Troops for the President - Today's Qs for O - 5/21/2012

PRESIDENT OBAMA: I'm going to call on Jake Tapper because Jake, the - Jay Carney told me that you've been talking to some of our troops in Afghanistan and, since so much of the topic of this summit has been on Afghanistan, obviously none of this would be working were it not for the extraordinary sacrifices that they're making. So -

TAPPER: Thanks, Mr. President. I appreciate it. Yeah, I put out an invitation for some troops and their families that I know, and I'll just give you two or three of them. Mr. President, "if this handoff and withdrawal prove premature, what plans are in place for dealing with an Afghanistan that's fallen apart or is possibly, again, under Taliban rule?" And I'll just do one more. "Do you feel that the reporting you receive from the Pentagon fully represents what the on-ground commanders assess? Is there any disconnect between what leaders feel the public and president want to hear versus what is actually occurring on the ground?" These are from troops I've met who served in Nuristan Province.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Yeah. Let - let me take the second question first. I mean, I think that one of the things that I emphasize whenever I'm talking to John Allen or the Joint Chiefs or any of the officers who are in Afghanistan is, I can't afford a whitewash.

I can't afford not getting the very best information in order to make good decisions. I should add, by the way, that - that the danger a lot of times is not that anybody's purposely trying to downplay challenges in Afghanistan. A lot of times it's just the military culture is, we can get it done. And so their thinking is, "how are we going to solve this problem," not "boy, why is this such a disaster?"

That's part of the reason why we admire our military so much and we love our troops, because they've got that can-do spirit. But - but I think that we have set up a structure that really tries to guard against that, because even in my White House, for example, I've got former officers who have been in Afghanistan, who I will send out there as part of the national security team of the White House, not simply the Pentagon, to interact and to listen and to go in and - and - and talk to the captains and the - and the majors and the corporals and the privates, to try to get a sense of - of what's going on. And I think the reports we get are relatively accurate in these sense that there is real improvement in those areas where we've had a significant presence.

You can see the Taliban not having a foothold, that there is - that there is genuine improvement in the performance of Afghan national security forces. But the Taliban is still a robust enemy and the gains are still fragile, which leads me then to the second point that you've made, in terms of premature withdrawal. I don't think that there's ever going to be an optimal point where we say this is all done, this is perfect, this is just the way we wanted it, and now we can, you know, wrap up all our equipment and - and go home. There's a process, and it's sometimes a messy process, just as it was in Iraq.

But think about it. We've been there now 10 years. We are now committing to a transition process that takes place next year, but the full transition to Afghan responsibility is almost two years away. And the Afghan security forces themselves will not ever be prepared if they don't start taking that responsibility. And frankly, the large footprint that we have in Afghanistan, over time, can be counterproductive. We've been there 10 years, and I think, you know, no matter how much good we're doing and how outstanding our troops and our civilians and diplomats are doing on the ground, 10 years, in a country that's very different, that's a strain, not only on our folks but also on that country, which at a point is going to be very sensitive about its own sovereignty. So I think that the timetable that we've established is a sound one, it is a responsible one. Are there risks involved in it? Absolutely. Can I anticipate that over the next two years there are going to be some bad moments along with some good ones? Absolutely.

But I think it is the appropriate strategy whereby we can achieve a stable Afghanistan that won't be perfect, we can pull back our troops in a responsible way, and we can start rebuilding America and making some of the massive investments we've been making in Afghanistan here back home, putting people back to work, retraining workers, rebuilding our schools, investing in science and technology, developing our - our business climate. So - but there are going to be challenges. The one thing that I'm - I'm never doubtful about is just the amazing capacity of our troops and their morale. You know, last - when I was in Bagram just a couple of weeks ago, the fact that you still have so much determination and stick-to-it-ness and professionalism, not just from our troops, but from all our coalition allies, all of ISAF, is a testament to them. It's extraordinary. And - and we're very proud of them.

-Jake Tapper

.........................for a morning when people don't, maybe, want to think about much.
A blog post this morning spoke in a 'soundbite' sort of a way about 'friends'. In my view, this is a huge topic and does not befit, really, the 'soundbite' approach.
Not having anything else to hand, I read a very good article in Wiki on the subject. As articles go, it was long. It was also quite comprehensive, although couldn't be expected to cover the topic completely - you'd probably need a library of books to do that!
I can offer only my own view - which of course is open to challenge; and is somewhat truncated due to the nature of blog posts.
'Friendship' is not a downgraded version of any relationship. In my view it is the 'home base' of all relationships between humans, and has no dividing lines within it to separate or diminish itself in any way. I suppose it might be viewed as a sort of 'Venn Diagram' (Spelling?) where several interlinking or overlapping circles mutually populate each other.
Friendship is a living entity that needs feeding to keep it alive. In the same way as we need food and water, friendship needs honesty and trust. It is, in my view, a relationship that will not survive in a vacuum. (Yesterday, I packed away a couple of favourite winter woolies in a vacuum bag, hoping that in the 'vacuum', moth larvae will not survive to eat my woolies!)
As the 'home base' of any human relationship, 'friendship' needs to be nurtured, along with the participants in that relationship. Human contact is vital; 'eye contact' especially - (and that's a topic that holds particular 'piquancy' for me at the moment.); and of course, time spent in the company of a friend is indespensible. Friends do not 'judge' each other - but they do, in my view, hold to the good in each other.
In this tiny, short piece, you may have noticed that I do not discuss 'friends' listed on blogs, although this does not preclude any such 'friend' from becoming a real friend, thus gaining riches far beyond wealth.

Four Traditional Marketing Tactics That Work Well Online | Small ...

Marketing has been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Over those years the format and approach has changed, and to a certain extent, has become quite scientific. Marketing professionals will poor over statistics and demographics in an attempt to deliver the best marketing plan possible. The arrival of the Internet has opened a lot of new possibilities, however, some of those old marketing tactics still work, even on the Internet. Compare these non-Internet marketing tactics to what is now available on the Internet.

  • Paid Advertising ? newspapers, billboards, television, radio. Paid advertising has been around for a long time. The online equivalent is pay-per-click advertising, banners, and video. However, there are some businesses that are finding that a combination of traditional offline marketing and online marketing still works. People do still read newspapers, they still look at billboards, and if your URL is easy to follow, they?ll look it up. Pay-per-click takes newspaper advertising one step further ? you only pay if a person clicks through whereas in a newspaper, you pay one charge no matter how many views that ad gets.
  • Social Marketing ? traditional bricks and mortar business had a tough time of it when it came to being good community citizens. If the community took a dislike to a business, then it was doomed. To prevent this, many business owners become involved in local social activities. Sponsoring sporting events, schools or charities made good sense ? you were out there shaking hands and making friends with the world. Online, social media marketing has a similar approach. You still make friends, shake hands (like, follow), and socialize to gain a good reputation.
  • Newsletters ? newsletters and print media in the form of catalogs or brochures/flyers were once very popular. What many businesses don?t realize is that they are still popular. E-mail marketing is still one of the most successful forms of marketing, and where paper based marketing material once considered junk mail, e-mail marketing is not so badly tarnished.
  • Coupons/special discounts ? many families live for coupons, they even trade them (and come to blows over them). Coupons still work online, in fact, their delivery is easier, more targeted, and can be better controlled online. Special discounts can fly around social media outlets like Twitter in an instant delivering a lot of traffic (digital or foot) and plenty of sales.

Those four traditional marketing tactics have worked well in the offline world for a long time. The online world has simply taken them, fine tuned them a little, then profited from them. Ironically, the cost of online marketing is probably a fraction now of what traditional offline marketing used to be.

Maxwell Maltz as the plastic surgeon learned that he could adjust the confront of a human being which has a incredibly unattractive bodily impairment these kinds of as being a hare lip, and big nose or facial scar, and many clients right away altered because of the operation turning out to be far more positive and self confident, but curiously he also discovered that many people today did not see their selves as a lot more appealing and weren?t in a position to just accept their selves even soon after the obvious bodily impairment had been removed. They acted as if they however had the bodily defect. What he learned was that it isn?t the bodily external change that will cause the shift in persona and self esteem, nevertheless it rather the interior shift and adjust of a person?s self picture.

'American Idol' Finale: Phillip Phillips Vs. Jessica Sanchez

Joshua Ledet just misses out on the big showdown.
By Adam Graham

The "American Idol" finale is set, and Joshua Ledet didn't get an invite.

Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez will compete in next week's season finale after Ledet was voted off the show Thursday (May 17). Ledet, the 20-year-old from Westlake, Louisiana, who was continually praised as one of the best contestants to ever grace the "Idol" stage, received the lowest number of votes from the 90 million votes cast, according to "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest.

Ledet set a record for standing ovations from the judges this season on "Idol"; barely a week went by when he didn't get the judges on their feet after one of his stellar performances. Ledet performed James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" at the close of the show Thursday, repeating a song that became one of his signature moments.

Show mentor Jimmy Iovine took partial blame for Ledet's performance Wednesday, saying by choosing Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama," he didn't give him a song with enough of a melody to captivate the audience and generate votes. "There was something missing, and I know it was the material. In fairness, I gave him a song that didn't have enough melody. Joshua needs melody, [and] I take 100 percent responsibility for that," Iovine said.

Still, he thought Ledet deserved to compete for the "Idol" crown next week. "Does Joshua belong in this finale? 100 percent, he should be in anyone's finale," he said.

Ledet's elimination gives Sanchez a shot at being the first female "Idol" winner since Jordin Sparks back in season six. At the onset of the season, it was said to be the women's year on "Idol," and four of the top six contestants were female. But three women were picked off in a row — Elise Testone, then Skylar Laine, then Hollie Cavanagh — threatening the show's girl-power contingent. Now Sanchez is carrying the torch for the ladies.

Iovine, in summing up Wednesday's performances, also blamed himself for picking a bad song for Sanchez, but said Phillips won the night with his version of Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight." "Hands down, it was the best performance he's done in the entire contest," he said, calling it "flawless." (In fairness, Iovine also said Phillips' version of Matchbox Twenty's "Disease" was "a total snooze-fest."

Regarding Sanchez, Iovine said, "She has to have the most magical moment she's had so far" in order to win it all. "If she gets in the finale," he said, "It's about the songs."

Before Ledet's elimination, Jackson said the final contestants were "three of the best we've ever had" and said all three have "big careers" ahead of them.

Also on Thursday's show, Adam Lambert dropped by to perform "Never Close Our Eyes," and Lisa Marie Presley (huh?) performed her new single "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet."

What did you think of "Idol" on Thursday? Did the right contestants make the finale? Let us know in the comments!

How Eliminating Your Debt Can Change Your Life

It is estimated that over 100,000 Canadians file a consumer proposal or file for bankruptcy annually. Hundreds of thousands of other Canadians are struggling with their own high account balances on loans and credit card accounts. These high account balances are often coupled with high monthly payments, a tight budget and a low level of personal savings. The combination of these factors can create a financial nightmare for individuals. A single financial event, such as the loss of a job or a serious illness, can cause them to lose control of the delicate balance of their finances. The stress of this situation can be extreme, and this stress can lead to insomnia, fatigue, digestive issues, depression and more. Further, this heavy debt burden can prevent you and your family from truly enjoying life as well as from planning and saving for the future.

What is the Best Credit Card?

Apply for a credit card with no credit history or a low credit score and there is a good chance that the bank will deny your request. This is almost always the outcome if you apply for an unsecured credit card. But if you need credit to improve your credit score, a secured credit card is the best credit card. You don?t need good credit for these cards. In fact, you don?t need a credit score or history. You can apply with your bank, and once you pay the deposit and the annual fee, you can obtain a credit card in your own name.

How to Eliminate A Credit Card Debt

When consumers get tired of dealing with their original creditor or bank, they often turn to the services of debt consolidation firms. These consolidation firms can provide options that can appear quite appealing to consumers after dealing with multiple monthly payments at high interest rates. The consolidators will lump all monthly payments into one and usually charge a lower interest rate. This may sound great but at the end of the day the consumer is still making monthly payments for years.

Three Bad Credit Repair Moves

That?s a big ?no.? Drowning in credit card debt is much different than say, taking on a federally-backed student loan. The nature of debt affects its volatility and effect on your credit score. Rather than paying down debts indiscriminately, take a look at the bigger picture and ask some probing questions. What kind of debt is it? Revolving, installment, etc.? How much are you paying in interest? How would reducing the balance affect your credit score? For example, while paying off credit card debt would reduce your credit utilization ratio and provide a jolt in your credit score, making extra payments on your 30-year fixed mortgage is another story. Do your homework to determine which debt has the most immediate effect on your credit and set your sights on those first.

GENEVA, N.Y. (AP) ? The wife of fired Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine claimed Wednesday that ESPN maliciously trampled her reputation by broadcasting salacious stories about her and about claims that her husband molested ball boys.

Laurie Fine held a news conference Wednesday and threatened to file a libel lawsuit in federal court against the cable network and two employees. ESPN in November broke the story of two former Syracuse ball boys, Robert Davis and Michael Lang, who claimed they were molested by Bernie Fine decades ago.

"I'm here today as a wife and a mother who has had to endure the trauma of being smeared in the public as a monster," she said, reading quickly from a statement. "My life has been destroyed."

Laurie Fine's lawyer, Lawrence Fisher of Pittsburgh, repeatedly declined to answer specific questions and said he was discussing the complaint with Bristol, Conn.-based ESPN. He has not yet filed a lawsuit.

ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said the complaint is without merit and the network stands by its reporting.

Bernie Fine has denied wrongdoing and hasn't been charged. Federal investigators opened an investigation into him following the allegations of a third man, 23-year-old Zach Tomaselli of Lewiston, Maine, who has since said he lied. The local prosecutor has called Davis and Lang credible but said the alleged crimes occurred too long ago to pursue.

Laurie Fine, with her two daughters at her side, said her husband called to wish her luck Wednesday. She would not address whether they are still together.

"Bernie does support this lawsuit, and he's behind me 100 percent," Laurie Fine said.

Laurie Fine said she was the victim of "treacherous lies" and said the attention has forced her to live in seclusion for the past six months and give up charity work she enjoyed.

"They should apologize and retract these horrible lies reported about me," she said.

Fine said the network was motivated by the unfolding child sex-abuse scandal at Penn State University.

"Although these defendants have known me to be a decent and honorable woman, they have maliciously attacked me in order to attack my husband and to boost television ratings in the wake of the Penn State scandal," she said.

The accusations from Davis and Lang, quickly picked up by other national media, roiled the Syracuse team's then-perfect season and brought criticism to Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim. Boeheim initially called Davis a liar out to capitalize on the Penn State scandal, but soon softened his stance.

Davis initially approached ESPN in 2003, but the network did not report the story then.

Fisher called the district attorney's comments on Davis' and Lang's credibility "irrelevant, immaterial, unsubstantiated and foolish."

Davis' lawyer, Gloria Allred, said if Laurie Fine does sue ESPN, she anticipates Davis will be called to testify. Last week, a Syracuse-area judge dismissed defamation suit by Davis and Lang against Boeheim and the university. Allred said she will appeal.

"It would be ironic if Ms. Fine is allowed to pursue her lawsuit claiming she was defamed when Bobby Davis was not permitted to pursue his defamation case," she said in an email statement.

Fisher said the media coverage has made it "impossible" for Laurie Fine to go out in public in her hometown, so they held the news conference in Geneva, a Finger Lakes resort town 45 miles west of Syracuse. The family has also put their suburban Syracuse home on the market.

"She can't even go to Wegmans," said Fisher, referring to a local supermarket chain.

Fisher said ESPN should apologize, retract the stories and "be punished for willful, wanton, reckless disregard for the reputation and the truth of Laurie Fine." He called it "a textbook example of defamation in the world of journalism."

Evaluating Family and Medical Leave Insurance for Washington State

As women?s participation in the workforce has increased, families have become more dependent on women?s earnings ? particularly since the Great Recession left significantly more men without jobs. Yet, women continue to take home less than their male counterparts across industries, age ranges and education levels. According to research by the Center for American Progress, a typical Washington woman earns $524,000 less than her male counterpart over a 40-year career.

Although a number of factors contribute to the earnings gap, many women experience what is known as the ?motherhood penalty? ? women with children have more difficulty getting hired and are more likely to be offered lower pay than other women and men with equivalent qualifications.

Notably, disparities in pay begin to increase as women reach child-bearing age. As they move into sandwich years, when they are caring for children and elders at the same time, the earnings gap continues to widen because women are less likely to receive promotions and accompanying pay raises.

Childbirth and family care

For women working full-time, paid sick and vacation leave have become more available for situations when a few days of leave is needed. However, sick and vacation leave are usually short-term and insufficient for serious health or family issues.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau show that more than half of first-time mothers used some form of paid leave after the birth of their first child between 2006 and 2008. More than a third of these women used a combination of leave, including paid vacation and sick days to spend time recovering from childbirth and caring for their newborns. Further, data show that while fewer women are quitting their jobs to care for newborns, more women are taking unpaid leave after giving birth and slightly more are being let go from their jobs.

Everyone in the department truly cares for one another and extends such a friendly hand to those who are new.

Rothenberg?s favorite production was last fall?s ?Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical? because it was not only about love, but also senior year.

?I got to play Jeannie and it was a blast,? Rothenberg said. ?All of my best friends were in the show as well, so it was a real bonding experience.?

Senior Paige Carter said she also hopes to make it to Broadway, but as an equity stage manager. In the immediate future, Carter is headed to Las Vegas to perform with Cirque du Soleil?s ?KA.? After she finishes her work with Cirque, she will start a year-long position with Olney Theatre Center in Washington, D.C.

?(I will) start working on gaining points toward becoming a member of (the Actors? Equity Association), the union for stage managers and actors,? Carter said. ?After that, I?m wide open. We?ll see where life takes me.?

Like Rothenberg, Carter said theater made her who she is today, because she was able to find herself and grow as a person. The theater at Elon is particularly full of energy, love and support for all of its members, she said.

?Everyone loves and cares about one another,? Carter said. ?Because of my involvement with theater, I?ve learned to be overwhelmingly accepting of others and, most importantly, myself.?

Carter worked with the production and design side of the Department of Performing Arts, which allowed her to be involved with most of the shows at Elon. She was the stage manager for ?Crimes of the Heart,? a Winter Term show, and rehearsed long hours for those three weeks. She said she became very close with Fred Rubeck, department chair, as well as the cast.

Senior Kristina Loeffke, a cast member in ?Crimes of the Heart,? is a double major in BFA acting and BA theatrical design and production. She has also performed in ?Jake?s Women,? ?The Time of Your Life? and ?Ajax,? while serving as the director, scenic designer and sound designer for many other productions. Because Loeffke has worked with so many shows, she has made many friendships with other students, she said.

Loeffke is currently exploring her post-Elon options in Atlanta and New York and has received offers to work on a few television shows.

?I am excited to explore that medium more,? Loeffke said. ?I just want to make enough money doing what I love that I don?t have to have a survival job. ?

Senior Ben Morris has directed, produced and acted in many plays at Elon, ranging from the 24-hour play festival to ?Macbeth.? He said he always looks forward to seeing who else will be in shows with him because it ranges from his best friends to people he doesn?t know.

?Through working on the show, I get to spend time with my best friends as well as get to know new people,? Morris said.

Morris will move to Chicago after graduation and take improvisational classes at Improv Olympic. He said his dream job is to continue improv while simultaneously working in theater.

Senior Anastasia Windeler has been involved with almost all of the dance productions during her four years at Elon, as well as some music theater shows.

?Elon provides such great opportunities for becoming engaged in the learning process,? Windeler said. ?Not only are the opportunities there, but the people bring such a great environment. Everyone in the department truly cares for one another and extends such a friendly hand to those who are new.?

Windeler said she has enjoyed observing her growth with fellow students in the performing arts. Aside from a dance major, she is also majoring in international studies, and the performing arts have given her a balance in her life, she said.

?While academics are so important to me, there is something so elemental and connective in the performing arts,? Windeler said. ?It has shown me that there is a deeper form of communication out there. The power of theater to make others think and feel is amazing, and I would never have realized the extent of that without my experiences at Elon.?
