Thousands flee as winds whip up Utah wildfire

Thousands of homes were evacuated from two small Utah communities on Friday as high winds whipped up a brush fire triggered by target shooters and pushed the flames toward houses and a nearby explosives factory.

The so-called Dump fire erupted Thursday in the Kiowa Valley near a landfill for Saratoga Springs, a town of 18,000 on the west shore of Utah Lake, about 35 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Nearly 9,000 people had been evacuated, Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon told The Deseret News.

The blaze initially scorched about 750 acres of cheat grass, sage and pinyon juniper south and west of town, but by Friday, a combination of strong winds and rising heat shifted the fire's direction and sparked rapid growth, Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Teresa Rigby said.

By Friday evening, the blaze had grown to more than 4,000 acres. Rigby said fire crews had cut containment lines around 20 percent of the blaze, but that number slipped as flames spread.

About 100 firefighters were working the blaze on Friday, with more teams expected, Rigby said. Air support was being provided by one air tanker and one helicopter. A red-flag warning for high wildfire hazards was posted across Utah, and Rigby said authorities are expecting winds of more than 20 mph by afternoon.

Sheriff's deputies with bullhorns rolled through Saratoga Springs neighborhoods ordering the first evacuations at about 10 a.m., after flames had burned to within half a mile of homes. By midday, evacuations were expanded to include a portion of nearby Eagle Mountain, just east of Saratoga Springs.

Homeowner and commercial photographer Renee Keith said she and her husband decided the fire had burned "too close for comfort" and began packing before authorities ordered them out. Keith said she packed her children's baby books, the computer hard drives, one bag of clothes and camera equipment.

"I was kind of nervous, especially when we were packing the car," Keith told Reuters. "Ash was falling on us as we were pulling away."

The Keiths said their biggest concern was for a nearby plant that makes explosives for the construction and mining industries. The fire was reportedly burning within one mile of the factory, but authorities said the flames appeared to have burned around it.

It was not clear Friday how long authorities would keep residents away, Rigby said.

In neighboring Colorado, fire managers on Friday reported making progress against a 100-square-mile fire burning west of Fort Collins, near the Wyoming border, after two days of cooler temperatures, calmer winds and higher humidity.

Officials there said containment of the fire, which ranks as the most destructive on record in Colorado, had increased to 60 percent.

But a return of triple-digit temperatures and gusty winds in the forecast posed a renewed challenge to firefighters battling the lightning-caused blaze, fire commander Bill Hahnenberg said.

The fire has been blamed for one casualty so far, a 62-year-old grandmother whose remains were found last week in the cabin where she lived alone.

Reuters contributed to this report.

CSN: Harper to market 'clown question' t-shirts

? ?
These days when a comment an athlete makes goes viral, it is only a matter of time before people start producing t-shirts and merchandise. It happened to Robert Griffin III with his 'RG3' moniker and it happened with New York Jets' linebacker Bart Scott when he famously said "can't wait" in a television interview. Both players were pro-active and decided to make merchandise using their famous words.

Now Nationals' outfielder Bryce Harper will do the same with the "that's a clown question, bro" comment he famously uttered last week that took the internet by storm.? Prior to the Nats-Rays game tonight, Harper told Comcast SportsNet's Kelli Johnson that Under Armour will begin selling t-shirts with the now often repeated phrase.?

Harper originally used the phrase when a Canadian reporter asked the 19-year-old a question about drinking last week. It quickly became a sensation on YouTube and was even used by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in jest.

Will Harper wear the shirt in public himself? That's a clown question, bro!

Throw a Couple's Shower with The Man Registry | Wedding Ideas ...

manregistryresize

When you mention the words ?bridal shower? to most men, they?ll likely stop listening and resume watching the ball game. Showers don?t involve them anyway, right? Well, that certainly isn?t the case today. One great way to include the groom and his male friends in the pre-wedding festivities is to throw a couple?s shower. Unlike the traditionally female-only ?bridal? shower of days past, this modern wedding shower includes both the bride and groom, as well as their male and female friends and/or family.

Couples showers typically focus on guy-friendly theme and gifts, such as lawn and BBQ, home bar, sports, home improvement or the honeymoon. Listening now, guys? I thought so. If you?re thinking about hosting a couples shower or if someone offers to throw one for you, here?s what you need to know:

Who hosts it? Members of the wedding party (groomsmen, bridesmaids or both), friends or family members (siblings, cousins, aunts/uncles, etc.) typically host couples showers. They can be hosted by one person, a couple or a group of people.

Location/venue. Depending on the theme of the shower, these events can be held at the hosts? home, a local restaurant or bar, or other fun locale.

Who?s invited? Guests typically include close male and female friends of the engaged couple (not limited to couples, of course?don?t forget any single pals!), family members, work colleagues, etc.

Theme/gift ideas. While there?s no rule that says couples showers have to focus on any specific theme, this is a perfect time to choose a theme that appeals to both men and women. So save the kitchen and bath and home d?cor showers for the girls, and think about more man-friendly themes, such as these:

-?????? Lawn and BBQ: A great shower to host in a backyard and offer guests grilled fare and cold beverages/cocktails. Gift ideas include grilling tools and accessories, landscaping/gardening tools and equipment, lawn games, fire pits, tiki torches, hammocks, and the like.

-?????? Stock the Bar: A shower that can be hosted in someone?s home, man cave or at the local watering hole with cocktails and appetizers. Gift ideas include drink ware/bar ware, bar utensils and accessories, bar signs/artwork, bottles of liquor, etc.

?

-?????? Sports: For sports-loving couples, this shower can be hosted at a home or venue near/overlooking the engaged couple?s favorite team?s field, stadium, etc. (such as a sports bar, clubhouse or stadium club). Gift ideas include sports-themed items such as these. Popular ideas are tailgating gear, custom team signs/artwork, team logoed drink ware/bar ware/serve ware, apparel or game tickets.

?

-?????? Home Improvement: A shower that can be hosted at someone?s home or other fun location. Gift ideas include ladders, power tools and hand tools, tool storage, painting equipment, or hardware store gift cards to help fund larger improvement projects.

?

-?????? Honeymoon: A great shower to host at someone?s home or a restaurant with cuisine that matches the honeymoon destination. Depending on the destination, gift ideas could include excursions and activities, snorkeling or skiing gear, hiking equipment, beach towels, travel gear, luggage or travel guides.

Ex-Indian Army major kills family, self in Fresno County home ...

A former major in the Indian Army who was wanted in a 1996 killing in the disputed Kashmir territory shot and killed his wife and two of their children in their Fresno County home Saturday before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.

Avtar Singh, 47, called 911 from his family?s home in Selma just after 6 a.m. Saturday and told police he had just killed four people and was about to kill himself, according to the Fresno County Sheriff?s Office.

The neighborhood was evacuated as a sheriff?s SWAT team used a robot to clear the home and find victims.

When investigators entered the home they found Singh dead in the living room and a woman and child believed to be his wife and 3-year-old son lying dead in the master bedroom. A 15-year-old boy believed to be their son was found dead in another bedroom. All four victims had gunshot wounds to the head.

Sounds coming from another bedroom led deputies to a 17-year-old boy described as ?barely alive? because of severe head trauma. He was taken to the hospital for surgery, but his condition was unknown.

Singh fled India after he and soldiers under his command were accused of kidnapping and killing human rights lawyer Jalil Andrabi during an anti-India uprising in March 1996 in the Indian-controlled Kashmiri city of Srinagar. Andrabi?s body was discovered on the banks of a local river, a gunshot to his head and his eyes gouged out.?

India sought Singh?s extradition from California last year after Selma police were called to his home for a domestic violence incident, the Fresno Bee reported.?It was unclear why he has remained free since then.

Singh owned and operated a trucking company called Jay Truck Lines and had recently told one of his employees that he was stressed over financial problems related to the company, the newspaper reported.

Police in Selma, about 15 miles southeast of Fresno, asked for assistance from the Fresno County Sheriff?s Department because they were aware of Singh?s military background and his being wanted by authorities in India.

(AP) ? The 15-year-old daughter of megachurch pastor Creflo Dollar told authorities her father choked and punched her, and hit her with his shoe during an argument over whether she could go to a party, according to a police report.

Dollar's 19-year-old daughter corroborated most of her sister's story, but Dollar disputed it, telling a sheriff's deputy he was trying to restrain her when she became disrespectful. When she began to hit back, he wrestled her to the floor and spanked her, according to the police report.

Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta. His World Changers Church International has 30,000 members in the Atlanta area, and the ministry has satellite churches across the U.S.

Dollar faces misdemeanor charges of simple battery and cruelty to children. He has been released from jail and his lawyer said he was expected to preach Sunday.

Dollar said in a statement Friday he loved his children and would never hurt them.

Around 1 a.m. Friday, his 15-year-old daughter called 911. She told a Fayette County sheriff's deputy that she and her father argued when he said she couldn't go to a party Saturday night, according to the report.

She went into the kitchen with her older sister. When her father asked why she was crying, she told him, "I do not want to talk right now," the report said.

Her father charged at her, put his hands around her throat, began to punch her and started hitting her with his shoe, she told the deputy. The deputy noted a scratch on her neck.

Dollar told the deputy he wouldn't let his daughter go to the party because of poor grades.

The deputy also interviewed Dollar's 19-year-old daughter, who said her father grabbed the younger girl's shoulders and slapped her in the face and choked her for about five seconds. She said her sister tried to break free, but did not fight back. When her father threw the 15-year-old on the floor, the older girl ran to get her mother.

The deputy also spoke to Dollar's wife, Taffi, who said she did not see the fight.

After interviewing Dollar and the two girls, the deputy asked for written statements. The older daughter initially wrote a statement that contradicted what she had told the deputy and was more in line with what Dollar said. When the deputy confronted her about the discrepancies, she told him it was because her parents were with her. Later, when separated from her parents, she wrote what she initially told him.

The 50-year-old Dollar leads the Creflo Dollar Ministries and is the pastor for World Changers Church International in the Atlanta suburb of College Park. World Changers Church-New York hosts over 6,000 worshippers each week.

Satellite churches are also in Los Angeles, Indianapolis, Washington, Cleveland, Dallas and Houston.

He and his wife, a co-pastor at the church, have five children, according to the church's website.

Dollar is a native of College Park and says he received a vision for the church in 1986. He held the first service in front of eight people in an elementary school cafeteria.

His ministry grew quickly and the church moved into its present location, an 8,500-seat sanctuary, on Dec. 24, 1995.

Dollar said in a 2007 interview with The Associated Press that he renounced his church salary, and his income only comes from personal investments, including a real estate residential property business and horse breeding company called Dollar Ranch. He's also published more than 30 books, focusing mostly on family and life issues, including debt management.

He said he also sometimes got up to $100,000 for a single appearance on his packed schedule of speaking engagements.

Along with Bishop Eddie Long, Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta who have built successful ministries on the prosperity gospel, which teaches that God wants to bless the faithful with earthly riches. Ministers in this tradition often hold up their own wealth as evidence that the teaching works.

Long and Dollar were among six televangelists investigated by Iowa U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley from 2007 to 2010, following questions about personal use of church-owned airplanes, luxury homes and credit cards by megachurch pastors and their families. The report did not find any definitive wrongdoing, but it expressed concern about the lack of financial oversight at such large ministries.

Potential Romney mates stress conservative cred

CHICAGO (AP) ? Stands up to unions? Check. Not afraid to chop government budgets? You bet. Cut taxes? Done that.

With Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker a GOP hero after his recall election triumph ? a mere mention of his name drew cheers Friday at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Chicago ? prominent Republicans seen as possible vice presidential picks took pains to remind conservatives they're working from a similar playbook.

New Jersey's Chris Christie, Louisiana's Bobby Jindal and Virginia's Bob McDonnell all paid visits to the conference in President Barack Obama's back yard, where they eagerly boasted of their own accomplishments.

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney is expected to give those three and others a look before choosing his running mate this summer.

NEW JERSEY GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE

Before there was Walker, Christie was the right's darling. The famously in-your-face East Coast governor made clear he was a pioneer, particularly by taking on union pensions.

He heralded billions of dollars in future savings by making public workers shoulder more of their benefits and by curbing growth in retirement payouts.

Christie offered a portrait of a quintessential leader ? someone willing to "bang enough heads together" and "cajole enough" ? that showed him in the mirror.

"That's what we did in New Jersey and that's the model for America," Christie said.

LOUISIANA GOV. BOBBY JINDAL

More than the rest, Jindal worked to associate himself with Walker.

The Louisiana leader spent eight minutes recapping the Wisconsin recall fight, careful to note that he went there to stump for Walker before Tuesday's election.

Jindal said he's also showing off a stiff spine with public sector unions back home. He hit on education initiatives such as tying pay more closely to achievement and expanding school choice, efforts that have spawned a lawsuit from teachers unions.

"Just like in Wisconsin the unions aren't giving up," Jindal said before building to a crescendo. "I've got a message to those teacher unions: We're not giving up either."

VIRGINIA GOV. BOB MCDONNELL

Virginia's chief executive promoted his state's move from red budget ink to surplus and an unemployment rate that has fallen to its lowest level in three years.

McDonnell also touted his efforts to restrain spending and tamp down pension liability.

"Those fiscal conservative principles actually work," McDonnell said. "People are back to work and participating in the American dream in Virginia."

McDonnell, who strolled the stage rather than speak from a rostrum, also plugged a role in sparing Walker. He's the chairman of the Republican Governors Association, which pumped $9.5 million into the recall fight.

"We wanted to make sure we had everything on the table for Scott to win," he said.

FORMER SEN. RICK SANTORUM

The only non-governor of the bunch, Santorum basked in adoration from a conservative movement that pushed him deep in the GOP presidential primaries.

Santorum used CPAC to launch a new venture: a political outreach group he's calling Patriot Voices.

The former Pennsylvania senator said his goal was to recruit 1 million members and mobilize them on Election Day to support candidates committed to faith and family causes. He said he'll be personally campaigning for candidates, including Romney, in months to come.

Santorum told reporters he has yet to release convention delegates bound to him during the primaries.

"I want to make sure that the folks who represent the values that I did during this campaign are also able to come to that convention and have their voices heard," he said.

Discovery provides evidence of new therapeutic target that could delay axon decay

WORCESTER, MA Degeneration of the axon and synapse, the slender projection through which neurons transmit electrical impulses to neighboring cells, is a hallmark of some of the most crippling neurodegenerative and brain diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington's disease and peripheral neuropathy. Scientists have worked for decades to understand axonal degeneration and its relation to these diseases. Now, researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School are the first to describe a gene dSarm/Sarm1 responsible for actively promoting axon destruction after injury. The research, published today online by Science, provides evidence of an exciting new therapeutic target that could be used to delay or even stop axon decay.

"This discovery has the potential to have a profound impact on our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases, much like the discovery of apoptosis (programmed cell death) fundamentally changed our understanding of cancer," said Marc R. Freeman, PhD, associate professor of neurobiology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and lead investigator on the study. "Identification of this gene allows us to start asking exciting new questions about the role of axon death in neurodegenerative diseases. For example, is it possible that these pathways are being inappropriately activated to cause premature axon death?"

For more than a century, scientists believed that injured axons severed from the neuron cell body passively wasted away due to a lack of nutrients. However, a mouse mutation identified in the early 1990s called slow Wallerian degeneration (Wlds) was able to suppress axon degeneration for weeks. This finding forced scientists to reassess Wallerian degeneration, the process through which an injured axon degenerates, as a passive process and consider the possibility that an active program of axon auto-destruction, akin to apoptotic death, was at work instead.

If Wallerian degeneration was an active process, hypothesized Dr. Freeman, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Early Career Scientist, then it should be possible through forward genetic screens in Drosophila to identify mutants exhibiting Wlds-like axon protection. Freeman and colleagues screened more than 2,000 Drosophila mutants for ones that exhibited long-term survival of severed axons. Freeman says this was a heroic effort on the part of his colleagues. The screen took place over the next two and a half years, and involved seven students and post-docs in the Freeman labJeannette M. Osterloh, A. Nicole Fox, PhD, Michelle A. Avery, PhD, Rachel Hackett, Mary A. Logan, PhD, Jennifer M. MacDonald, Jennifer S. Zeigenfusswho performed the painstaking and labor-intensive experiments needed on each Drosophila mutant to identify flies that suppressed axonal degeneration after nerve injury.

Through these tests, they identified three mutants (out of the 2,000 screened) where severed axons survived for the lifespan of the fly. Next generation sequencing and chromosome deficiency mapping techniques were then used to isolate the single gene affected in all three dSarm. These were loss-of-function alleles, meaning that Drosophila unable to produce the dSarm/Sarm1 molecule exhibited prolonged axon survival for as many as 30 days after injury. Freeman and colleagues went on to show that mice lacking Sarm1, the mammalian homolog of dSarm, also displayed remarkable preservation of injured axons. These findings provided the first direct evidence that Wallerian degeneration was driven by a conserved axonal death program and not a passive response to axon injury.

"For 20 years people have been looking for a gene whose normal function is to promote axon degeneration," said Osterloh, first author on the study. "Identification of the dSarm/Sarm1 gene has enormous therapeutic potential, for example as a knockdown target for patients suffering from diseases involving axonal loss."

The next step for Freeman and colleagues is to identify additional genes in the axon death pathway and investigate whether any have links with specific neurodegenerative diseases. "We're already working with scientists at UMMS to understand the role axon death plays in ALS and Huntington's disease," said Freeman. "We are very excited about the possibility that these findings could have broad therapeutic potential in many neurodegenerative diseases."

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Nasdaq stock exchange said Wednesday that it plans to hand out $40 million in cash and credit to reimburse investment firms that got ensnared by technical problems with trading Facebook stock.

FINRA, the financial industry's self-regulatory group, will review claims for compensation.

Facebook went public May 18 amid great fanfare. But computer glitches at the Nasdaq plagued the day. They delayed the opening of trading by half an hour and kept some investors from buying shares in the morning, selling them later in the day, or even from knowing whether their orders went through. Some investors have complained that the technical problems left them holding shares that they didn't want.

Nasdaq will pay about $14 million in cash to investment companies that file valid claims. The rest will be given as credit for the costs that firms have to pay to trade on the Nasdaq.

Nasdaq didn't estimate how much it expected to receive in claims, or whether it thought $40 million would cover all the claims. But the amount is more than usual: The company has traditionally imposed a $3 million cap for reimbursing customers who lost money because of technical problems.

The stock originally priced at $38 and closed that first day at $38.23, a disappointment to speculators who had hoped for a first-day pop. Nasdaq has said it was embarrassed by the glitches, but that they didn't contribute to the underwhelming first-day returns.

Nasdaq says it will reimburse investment firms that tried to sell shares at $42 or less but either couldn't sell or sold at a lower price than they intended. It will also reimburse investment firms that bought at $42 but whose trades weren't immediately confirmed.

Shares went as high as $45 on the first day but haven't returned anywhere near those levels. The stock was trading at $25.85 Wednesday afternoon but rose sharply, to $26.94, after the Nasdaq announcement.

The Facebook offering has left a bad taste for many investors, though they don't blame Nasdaq alone. Many also think that Facebook as well as Morgan Stanley, the main bank that underwrote the deal, overestimated demand, pricing the shares too high and issuing too many of them.

The Nasdaq is locked in a constant battle for listings with its chief rival, the New York Stock Exchange. The NYSE, with roots dating to the 18th century and its familiar neoclassic headquarters on Wall Street, bills itself as the reliable and well-known. Nasdaq, which started in 1971, promotes itself as a high-tech exchange favored by high-tech companies including Apple and Google.

Nasdaq says the problems have been fixed and that it has hired IBM to review its operating systems. It needs approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission for its reimbursement plan.
