Windows XP shut down to prevent damage

File system corruption is the most likely cause.

Run chkdsk as described in this link, when it is done restart the PC see if Windows loads.

If Windows loads find out what brand of hard drive you have and go to the manufacturers website and download their diagnostics tools for hard drives and run it, see if the hard drive has bad sectors or is failing.

If Windows does load, back up your important files to an external hard drive before doing anything else.
