The Hangover re-imagined as a horror film (video)

In 2009, ?The Hangover? dominated the summer box office on its way to becoming the most profitable ?R? rated comedy ever. But the film, and its sequel, are certainly not without their critics.

Regardless of where you stand, you?ll probably enjoy this hilariously edited movie trailer for the film, which re-imagines The Hangover as a horror movie.

Warning, there are two spots of foul language in the trailer, so don?t this one in front of your kids.

Film student Richard W. Scott edited the footage as part of his college dissertation in order to, in Scott?s words, serve as, ?part of an experimental investigation into the power of post-production techniques on a movie's genre.?

Scott employs several editing techniques that are common in today?s horror films. For examples, the color-coding of the trailer has been saturated into sepia tones, as opposed to the actual film?s bright and welcoming colors. And the music has been replaced with sharp and harsh sound cues which put the viewer on edge.

But the real creativity lies in the way that Scott has pieced the footage together, to make the film appear to be a dark journey into a world where the character of Alan, portrayed by Zach Galifinakis, is actually a murderer on the loose in Las Vegas wreaking havoc upon the lives of his unsuspecting friends and anyone else who stumbles across his path.

As Alan declares at the end of the clip, ?I don?t care what happens. I don?t care if I kill someone.?

And if you want to see more of Scott's work, he has put together another clip for his dissertation, which re-imagines the 2005 film "Batman Begins" as a comedy.

Republicans Blast Don Young, Demand an Apology

Alaska Congressman Don Young's use of racial slurs in reference to Latinos prompted a strong backlash from his fellow Republican Party members today as both House and Senate leaders demanded an apology from Young.

Young used the derogatory term "wetbacks" to refer to Latino workers on his father's ranch in an interview Thursday. His comments came only a few weeks after the Republican National Committee released a party "autopsy" report on the presidential election that outlined revitalization strategies, which included prioritizing Hispanic voter outreach.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas was the first to condemn the congressman's words:

"Migrant workers come to America looking for opportunity and a way to provide a better life for their families. They do not come to this country to hear ethnic slurs and derogatory language from elected officials. The comments used by Rep. Young do nothing to elevate our party, political discourse or the millions who come here looking for economic opportunity," Cornyn said in a statement.

House Speaker John Boehner followed quickly with a statement of his own:

"Congressman Young's remarks were offensive and beneath the dignity of the office he holds. I don't care why he said it - there's no excuse and it warrants an immediate apology."

Representative Joaquin Castro tweeted the following:

Protective prion keeps yeast cells from going it alone

Most commonly associated with such maladies as "mad cow disease" and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, prions are increasingly recognized for their ability to induce potentially beneficial traits in a variety of organisms, yeast chief among them.

Now a team of scientists has added markedly to the job description of prions as agents of change, identifying a prion capable of triggering a transition in yeast from its conventional single-celled form to a cooperative, multicellular structure. This change, which appears to improve yeast's chances for survival in the face of hostile environmental conditions, is an epigenetic phenomenon?a heritable alteration brought about without any change to the organism's underlying genome.

This latest finding, reported in the March 28 issue of the journal Cell, has its origins in work begun several years ago in the lab of Whitehead Institute Member Susan Lindquist. In 2009, Randal Halfmann, then a graduate student in Lindquist's lab, identified dozens of proteins in yeast that have the ability to form prions. That research greatly expanded the known universe of prion elements in yeast, but it failed to answer a key question: What function, if any, do these prions actually have?

In search of an answer, Halfmann, now a fellow the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and colleagues in the Lindquist lab attempted to exploit the fact that several of the prion-forming proteins they had identified acted to modify transcription of yeast genes. It stood to reason that if they could identify which genes were being regulated, they might be able to determine the prions' function.

"We looked at the five transcriptional regulators that are known to be prions in yeast, and we found that in fact, only one gene in the entire yeast genome was regulated by all five transcription factors," says Halfmann.

That gene, as it turns out, was FLO11, a key player in multicellularity in yeast. Indeed changes in FLO11 expression have been shown to act as a toggle, switching yeast from spherical to filamentous form. Halfmann notes that FLO11, which has been shown to be regulated by epigenetic elements, is also highly responsive to environmental stress. Knowing that the prion form of a protein is essentially a misfolded form of that protein, and that stressful conditions increase the frequency of protein misfolding and prion formation, the scientists began to consider the possibility that the prions themselves might be among the epigenetic switches influencing the activity of FLO11.

The group focused on one transcription factor known as mot3, finding that yeast cells containing the prion form of this factor, [MOT3+], acquired a variety of multicellular growth forms known to require FLO11 expression. This was a clear indication that prion formation was causing the differentiation of the cells and their subsequent cooperation. But what about the stress aspect of the hypothesis?

By testing yeast cells against a variety of stressors, the scientists discovered that exposure to a concentration of ethanol akin to that occurring naturally during fermentation increased [MOT3+] formation by a factor of 10.They also found that as the cells exposed to ethanol shifted their metabolism to burn surrounding oxygen through respiration, the prions reverted to their non-prion conformation, [mot3-], and the yeast returned to the unicellular state. In essence, prion formation drove a shift to multicellularity, helping the yeast to ride out the ethanol storm.

"What we have in the end is two sequential environmental changes that are turning on a heritable epigenetic element and then turning it off," says Halfmann. "And between those two changes, the prion is causing the cells to acquire a multicellular growth form that we think is actually important for their survival."

Lindquist, who is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, has long argued that prions have played a vital role in yeast evolution and has amassed a body of strong supporting evidence.

"We see them as part of a bet-hedging strategy that allows the yeast to alter their biological properties quickly when their environments turn unfavorable," Lindquist says. She also theorizes that prions may play such roles beyond yeast, and her lab intends to take similar approaches in the hunt for prions and prion-like mechanisms that are potentially beneficial in other organisms.

For Lindquist lab postdoctoral scientist Alex Lancaster, who is also an author of the new Cell paper, these latest findings hint at a potentially novel approach to understanding basic mechanisms underlying the complexities of human diseases, including cancer, whose hallmarks include protein misfolding, epigenetic alterations, metabolic aberrations, and myriad changes in cell state, type, and function. Lancaster likens the opportunity to that of opening a black box.

"It's exciting to think that this could become another tool in the toolbox in the study of multicellularity," Lancaster says. "We know that some tumors are a heterogeneous population of cells and we know that tumor cells can evolve within in their environments to help ensure their own survival. This system could help us further understand the role of epigenetic inheritance within tumors and how it might be influencing cell-cell interactions and even affecting the effectiveness of drug therapies."

Quick View (for Android)

Quick View (free) for Andorid is the mobile companion to DigitalQuick, a service that allows you to easily encrypt files on your computer and on the file-syncing service Dropbox. DigitalQuick also allows you to control what other people can do with your secure documents, such as edit, copy, and print.

Though still in beta, DigitalQuick and Quick View offer a solution for individuals and businesses who want to take advantage of Dropbox's low cost and utility without compromising security. However, Digital Quick is quirky and the mobile app is no different. In my testing, Quick View lived up to its name: With it, you can quickly view secure files on the go?and little else.

Finding Files
Getting files into Digital Quick is a bit of a Byzantine process, requiring you to encrypt files on your computer and then move them on to your Android device via USB. Then, you fire up a file manager on your Android device (I use the Astro File Manager) and move the files into the My Documents directory inside the Quick View folder.

Did you have Quick View running while you did this? Well, you'll have to wait a full ten minutes before the app will sync with the DigitalQuick servers and update the permissions for the files you've moved. Until then, you'll see confusing error messages. There's no way to force the app to refresh, so you'll have restart the app, or move files into the Quick View directory before launching the app.

The Fassoo.com team has told me that future versions will include real-time permissions updating.

DigitalQuick's selling point is its support for Dropbox, and accessing your secure files from that service is straightforward with Quick View. Just tap the large Dropbox icon on the app's homescreen, tap allow on the next screen, and your DigitalQuick files (along with everything else in your Dropbox account) is available.

The process for linking Dropbox to DigitalQuick and adding encrypted files is covered in our review of the Web service.

Working With Quick View
Once you have access to your files, Quick View lets you view the contents without decrypting the files. Unfortunately, the built-in document viewer will not let you copy, edit, save, or really do anything with your documents.

You can decrypt files, removing all permissions and encryption, to share with users who aren't DigitalQuick users. Doing so, of course, defeats the purpose of using a document security system. You can also view the permissions assigned to a document, such as limitations on editing and printing. Unfortunately, you cannot change the permissions from the app?to do so, you'll have to login to the DigitalQuick website.

Quick View lets you share DigitalQuick documents via email, which is useful if your files are stored locally. Dropbox has more robust sharing options, though, which don't appear to affect the encryption or permissions of DigitalQuick documents. So you may be better off just sharing your documents through Dropbox directly.

Prior to publishing this review, DigitalQuick's developers informed us that an update allows users to import files directly from Dropbox without decrypting them and for users to access their local encrypted files without an Internet connection. These are welcome additions, but did not affect the score of the review.

Not for the Faint of Heart
If you're an avid DigitalQuick user already familiar with its quirks, using Quick View is a no brainer?despite all its drawbacks. If you're not a Digital Quick user, the app serves no purpose.

Because the service is still in beta, I don't want to be overly harsh, but users should be aware that Quick View is far from a finished product. The utility of being able to view and decrypt files is overshadowed by the difficulty in opening them, and the app lacks critical features like a built-in file manager and document editor. Though the app looks well-made it badly needs an improved user interface as the current version is difficult to use and completely un-intuitive. The included documentation did little to relieve my confusion.

The time has come for a service like DigitalQuick, but it and Quick View need to mature before they'll be ready to fill that niche.

Google patent application would tie camera settings to local weather

GPS is burgeoning into a tool for more than just finding our way, such as choosing gears on a weekend drive. If one of Google's newly published patent applications becomes reality, positioning might also fix our off-color photos. Its proposed technique would use GPS to automatically tune a camera based on both the local climate and whether or not you're outdoors: the white balance and saturation could be different for a sunny day in the park than a rainy day stuck inside, for example. While automatic settings are already commonplace, the method could lead to more accurate output that reduces the urge to flick on a manual mode. There's no guarantee that we'll ever see the patent in a shipping product, but don't be surprised if future Android smartphones produce uncannily good photography with little effort.

'The Host' Movie Review ? Stephenie Meyer's New Film Is A Must ...

Vampires are taking a backseat and giving aliens a turn in the spotlight with Stephenie Meyer?s new flick that will catch the hearts of all who watch it. ?Twilight? fans and haters alike will be glad to have seen this movie.

In a crazy, messed-up world, humans are being taken over by alien souls. That is the setting of the new movie The Host, based on a novel by Stephenie Meyer. Humans are seen as destructive and mean, so the aliens think it?s their right to save the planet by taking over the bodies of those who inhabit it.

Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) is human and tries to hide from alien ?seekers,? alien souls that look for humans in order to get rid of them, with her brother, Jamie (Chandler Canterbury), and her lover, Jared (Max Irons). Melanie is captured while protecting her brother and a soul named Wanderer (Saoirse) is put in her body. However, Melanie is too strong and begins to mentally resist Wanderer. This is where the love and chaos really begins. (You know, because alien souls chasing humans isn?t enough chaos.)

In case you weren?t a fan of the Twilight franchise, it must be said that this movie is completely different. There is still love, friendship and fighting all in a sci-fi setting, but Saoirse plays the female lead and she is perfection.

Saoirse Plays The Life Of Two

It is tough enough for an actress to play one character, but Saoirse plays two characters in one body. ?Plus, she manages to do so without looking too much like a crazy person! It takes a bit of time to get used to hearing Saoirse?s character Wanda, short for Wanderer, speak out loud to a voice that is speaking within her own mind. This would be the voice of Melanie, the human that Wanda has taken over. The first scene, where they talk to each other, I literally laughed out loud. They spoke like two-year-olds fighting over a toy ? not pretty.

?Mine!? yelled Melanie as the voice inside her head.

?No, mine,? Wanda flatly said out loud in front of a mirror.

Okay, we get it. One?s a ?soul? and one is what?s left of a human, and they are stuck in the same body. Good, let?s move on. And the movie quickly does?move on, when Wanda sees all of Melanie?s memories and realizes that Melanie is just a strong, caring person who loves her brother, Jamie, and her lover, Jared, so much. Wanda learns that Melanie put herself in harm?s way in order to keep her brother safe and that proves how good she truly is.

Wanda Proves Herself

Being inside Melanie?s body and seeing all of her memories causes Wanda to start to feel what Melanie feels and she begins to realize that the way the ?souls? are taking over the humans might not be the path that she wants to follow. So she escapes from the other aliens, including Top B***h aka The Seeker (Diane Kruger), who will stop at nothing to find all humans and take them over. Wanda gives The Seeker the slip, which doesn?t really sit well. Thrust into a new world, Wanda learns to love the humans, including Melanie. A group of humans (Melanie?s group), which Wanda encounters and stays with, starts to love Wanda as well, even though she is part of the alien group that is trying to take over all humans.?Aw, so much love. The problem?

The Lovely Triangle Of Love

A love triangle, of course. Well, a triangle that kind of overlaps. I know, I know. Twilight had a triangle, but this is different. I promise. Jared loves Melanie and Melanie loves Jared. A human named Ian (Jake Abel) starts to fall for Wanda and she with him. What makes this ?triangle? difficult is that Melanie and Wanda are in the same body, which makes for some awkward scenes.

First, no boy ever really knows who he is kissing. Second, Jared gets hit a couple of times. Plus, there is some strange back-and-forth and taking turns going on between who gets to kiss the girl at the end that is just kind of hard to watch without laughing, but it all makes sense.

?The Host? Is A Must See

Everything in this movie makes sense even though it is some crazy, sci-fi world with teenagers as the lead characters. The actors are really good in the roles that they were cast to play. Max and Jake both convincingly play characters that care about Melanie?s body and the souls that are in it. Saoirse is phenomenal and should get all the awards in the world for playing this role and playing it extremely well. Since Kristen Stewart won all the awards that she did for Twilight, Saoirse should win at least double that.

Go see The Host!?Enjoy the good acting, laugh at the completely comical situations that sometimes occur, and cry at the scenes between Wanda/Melanie and her brother. Most importantly, enjoy the total b***h that is Diane Kruger as The Seeker.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) ? Major findings on the Jan. 8, 2011, attack on former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords gleaned from about 2,700 pages of documents released Wednesday, including survivor accounts, police reports and interviews with friends and family of gunman Jared Loughner:

PARENTS

Amy Loughner described her son's run-ins with authorities, use of marijuana and cocaine and increasingly erratic behavior. She said a drug test turned up negative. Randy Loughner said his son became more and more difficult, and it was a challenge to have a rational conversation: "I tried to talk to him. But you can't, he wouldn't let you. ... Lost, lost, and just didn't want to communicate with me no more." Randy Loughner said his son "just doesn't seem right lately."

TALKED TO SELF

Despite the bizarre behavior and his school's recommendation he undergo a mental health evaluation, the parents didn't seek help. Loughner, who was ultimately diagnosed with schizophrenia, often talked to himself in the year before the shooting and even laughed during the conversations, which weren't angry or about hurting anyone, his mother said. "And sometimes he would look like he was having a conversation with someone right there. Be talking to someone. I don't know how to explain it. I don't."

SCHOOL VIDEO

Hours after the shooting, Randy Loughner mentioned a video that caused Pima Community College to expel his son. "They didn't like his video. 'Cause, he's always, his First Amendment rights. He's, uh, he's too intelligent. You know? And they, and it, and they, they dismissed him from school. Told him he needed to go see, seek medical help to come back to school. ... He felt that the pigs were out to get him."

FIRED FROM JOB

The father considered his son's firing as a salesman at an Eddie Bauer store to be a turning point: "He just wasn't the same. He just, nothing, nothing worked, seem to go right for him."

SHOTGUN

Loughner bought a 12-gauge shotgun in 2008, but his parents took it away from him after he was expelled.

HANDGUN PURCHASE

One-time Loughner friend Zachary Osler was an employee at a store where Loughner bought a Glock 9 mm handgun with a 15-round magazine in November 2010. Loughner had a military style haircut and cleared all background checks. He used a Visa card to pay the $559 for the gun and a box of ammo.

GUN STORE JOB

Osler remembered Loughner coming into the gun store on at least two occasions in the previous year, including once to apply for a job, for which he was denied. Osler said hello during one of the visits, but Loughner didn't acknowledge or look at him and just continued onward.

Osler told investigators he had grown uncomfortable with Loughner's personality. "He would say he could dream and then control what he was doing while he was dreaming."

HOME LIFE

Osler told investigators Loughner's parents drank heavily and he didn't get along with his father. "A lot of the times I'd be over there his dad would be yellin' at him about whatever. Kind of a somewhat hostile environment. I never really felt comfortable over there," Osler said.

PISTOL IN WAIST

A few weeks before the shooting, Loughner showed up at the apartment of boyhood friend Anthony Kuck with a 9 mm pistol in his waistband. Loughner said he bought the gun for Christmas for "home protection." Kuck's roommate, Derek Heintz, said Loughner left a bullet as a souvenir. Kuck said he had seen Loughner deteriorate over time: problems with drinking in high school, trouble with police, being kicked out of college, then showing up with a shaved head, bullet tattoos on his shoulder and a gun. "I just know his personality is not normal."

SUICICAL VOICEMAIL

On the day of the shooting, friend Bryce Tierney told investigators that Loughner had called him early in the morning and left a cryptic voicemail that he believed was suicidal. "He just said, 'Hey, this is Jared. Um, we had some good times together. Uh, see you later.' And that's it." Tierney tried to call back, but it was a restricted number that didn't register on his phone.

TRAFFIC STOP

A wildlife agent pulled Loughner over that morning for a traffic violation. He cried and said, "I've just had a rough time," and then composed himself, thanked the agent and shook his hand after he was let go with a warning. The agent asked Loughner again if he was OK, and Loughner said he was going home.

CAB RIDE

Loughner went to a convenience store immediately before the shooting and had the clerk call a cab for him. As he waited, he paced inside and outside the store and went to the bathroom three or four times. The employee said that at one point Loughner looked up at a clock and said, "Nine twenty-five, I still got time."

THE ENCOUNTER

Giffords intern Daniel Hernandez, who helped people sign in as they lined up to see Giffords, recalled handing Loughner a clipboard. "The next thing I hear is someone yell, 'gun!'"

CARTRIDGES FLYING

Doris Tucker was talking to Giffords when she was shot. All she recalls of Loughner was a dark, slim shape. "I remember screaming and ... hearing the terrible noise, and seeing the cartridges fly," said Tucker, whose husband was wounded. "I was talking, the next thing I knew, she was down. ... I saw her fall." Witness Lane Beck was pulling up in her car, with Giffords and the line of constituents in full view. Loughner was "kind of hopping up and down as he was shooting," she said. "His face was very animated."

LOUGHNER TACKLED

Patricia Maisch said Loughner walked up the line of people waiting to talk to Giffords and shot people at random, including the woman next to her. Then, three men tackled him. In the ensuing struggle, Loughner tried to reload. "He was partly on top of me. I had laid down to get out of the line of fire, I didn't know what else to do. ... Apparently he was out of bullets. He pulled the clip out, so I grabbed the clip and would not let him have that." Maisch then kneeled on Loughner's ankles while others held him down, until she noticed that one of the men was bleeding from his head. She went into the Safeway supermarket to get paper towels to stanch the flow of blood.

GIFFORDS RESPONSE

Hernandez helped tend to his boss after she was shot in the head. "She couldn't open her eyes. I tried to get any responses for her. Um, it looked like her left side was the only side that was still mobile. Um, she couldn't speak. It was mumbled. She was squeezing my hand," Hernandez said. "Her breathing was getting shallower. Uh, I then lifted her up so that she wasn't flat on the ground against the wall."

FULL POCKETS

Loughner had two Glock magazines in his left front pocket, both fully loaded. In his other front pocket was a foldable knife with about a 4-inch blade. In his back right pocket, he had a baggie with some money, a credit card and his Arizona driver's license. He had peach-colored plugs in his ears and was wearing a black beanie, a black hoodie-type sweatshirt, khaki pants and Skechers shoes.

MORE GUNS

At Loughner's house, police found two shotguns in the trunk of a car parked in the garage, where they also found photographs of President Bill Clinton and other Pima County officials, including U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva eating at a Mexican restaurant. A search of a safe in Loughner's room turned up a gunlock, an envelope with his Glock's serial number on it and two spent bullet casings. The envelope said he planned to go ahead with an assassination. Items seized included a copy of the Anarchist Cookbook, photo negatives and writings.

INTERROGATION

Loughner was polite and cooperative with authorities the afternoon of the shooting. The conversation as Loughner sat in restraints in an interview room was mainly small talk. Little was said over the four hours. Loughner asked at one point if he could please use the restroom and said "Thank you" when allowed. At another point he complained of being sore: "I'm about ready to fall over." When a detective told Loughner he was going to change his restraints, Loughner responded, "Okay. I'm not going to move."

WHY GIFFORDS

Tierney told investigators he wasn't surprised Loughner shot Giffords. "I don't think he liked Gabrielle Giffords," he said, recalling that when she visited the college they attended, Loughner asked her "'What is government?' and stuff." ... She couldn't give him the answer. ... I feel like he had ... something against Gabrielle Giffords."

Internet slowed by cyber attack on spam blocker

LONDON (Reuters) - One of the largest ever cyber attacks is slowing global internet services and the disruption could get worse, experts said on Wednesday, after an organization blocking "spam" content became a target.

Spamhaus, a London and Geneva-based non-profit group which helps weed out unsolicited "spam" messages for email providers, said it had been subjected to "distributed denial of service" (DDoS) attacks on an unprecedented scale for more than a week.

"Based on the reported scale of the attack, which was evaluated at 300 Gigabits per second, we can confirm that this is one of the largest DDoS operations to date," online security firm Kaspersky Lab said in a statement.

"There may be further disruptions on a larger scale as the attack escalates."

Spamhaus publishes blacklists used by internet service providers (ISPs) to weed out spam in email traffic.

The group is directly or indirectly responsible for filtering as much as 80 percent of daily spam messages, according to Cloudflare, a company that said it was helping Spamhaus mitigate the attack.

"We've been under this cyber-attack for well over a week," Steve Linford, chief executive of Spamhaus, told the BBC. "They are targeting every part of the internet infrastructure that they feel can be brought down."

Perpetrators of DDoS attacks typically target websites by flooding servers with messages from multiple systems so they cannot identify and respond to legitimate traffic.

Paul Vlissidis, group technical director at internet security firm NCC, said the volumes of traffic involved in the attack were having a knock-on effect on the rest of the internet.

Because many computers were involved in the attack, it was difficult to defend against.

"If you have a few computers sending large amounts of traffic you can filter them out easily. When literally thousands and thousands are involved it makes it much, much harder," he told Reuters.

However, according to thinkbroadband, an independent British information website which allows users to test their broadband speed, there appeared to be little evidence of a slowdown.

"Of course it is possible that people may be finding some services or sites they access over the Internet are performing slower than usual ... but there appears to be no evidence to say that UK broadband users have been slowed down across the board," it said on its blog.

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) ? Entering the auditorium on a motorized scooter and delivering remarks in halting speech, South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson announced Tuesday that he would retire next year at the end of his term and acknowledged he remains limited by a 2006 health crisis that nearly killed him.

Smiling and joking at times as he made the announcement at a press conference in his hometown of Vermillion, the 66-year-old said the effects of his life-threatening brain hemorrhage had made speech and mobility increasingly difficult.

"I feel great, but I must be honest ... I appreciate my right arm and right leg aren't what they used to be, and my speech is not entirely there," Johnson said, his delivery slurred at times.

Johnson, who until recently relied on a cane to get around, has become dependent on the motorized scooter he used to enter the auditorium at the University of South Dakota where he made his remarks. He also said he hoped to spend more time with his five grandchildren and that "I think mostly it's time to go."

Johnson's departure helps solidify GOP prospects of claiming the state's first open Senate seat since 1978. Republican former Gov. Mike Rounds had announced plans last year to challenge Johnson, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, and has rallied much of the state and national party establishment behind him.

In a sign Republicans are not yet lock-step behind Rounds, a Washington-based political action committee released a statement Tuesday criticizing Rounds' spending during two terms as governor, and calling for a more conservative candidate to run for Johnson's seat. The same fractures between tea party-aligned and more moderate Republicans cost the GOP seats that were seen as winnable in 2010 and 2012.

On the Democratic side, long-rumored possible successors including Johnson's son, South Dakota's U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson, and former U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.

"I've talked to Brendan now and then, but I'm not leaning on him to run or not run," Johnson told The Associated Press after the event. "I gather he is undecided."

Brendan Johnson declined to comment on his political plans Tuesday. He has avoided public statements about the race, but has had conversations with party activists in the state, and advisers and potential donors outside South Dakota.

Herseth Sandlin, 42, is general counsel for Raven Industries, Corp., a position she began last year after returning to South Dakota from Washington, D.C. She had worked as a lawyer in Washington after losing re-election to a fourth U.S. House term in 2010.

"While I appreciate the encouragement I've received I haven't focused on the future political opportunities," she told The AP.

Although both prospects have political networks to tap, both also face potential liabilities.

The younger Johnson, 37, has never held political office and would face questions about his father's involvement in the confirmation process to his federal post. Herseth Sandlin has taken some positions at odds with some South Dakota Democratic activists, including opposing the 2010 Affordable Care Act, which could hurt in a potential Democratic primary.

Republicans too could face ideological tension. U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem, elected in 2010, has been courted to challenge Rounds by South Dakota conservatives. While Noem has shown little movement toward investigating a 2014 Senate campaign, aides said Tuesday: "She hasn't ruled anything in or out."

Nationally, Republicans said by stepping aside, the politically resilient Johnson, who also retains a $1.2 million campaign war chest, gives the GOP its best chance to gain a seat in its quest for the majority.

"I believe South Dakota moves into the top slot as the most likely Republican pickup," said Greg Strimple, a Republican pollster and past consultant to the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Johnson, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, joins Democratic Sens. Carl Levin of Michigan, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey as seasoned and influential Democrats departing the chamber, where Republicans need to gain six seats to take control. Two Republican senators have announced their retirements, both in Republican-performing states Georgia and Nebraska.

South Dakota was carried by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney last year, adding urgency for Democrats hoping to keep their majority. Republicans must gain six seats to retake the chamber in 2014.

With his wife Barbara at his side, Sen. Johnson remained standing, leaning on his stronger left hand at the podium, taking questions from reporters then posing for pictures and shaking hands with supporters ? reaching out with his left ? for an hour.

"I look forward to serving the remaining two years as the country is facing difficult times on many fronts and I will work every day to find a bipartisan solution to these challenges," he said.

Boston mayor to announce he won't seek re-election

BOSTON (AP) ? Boston's longest-serving mayor, Thomas Menino, will formally announce that he won't be seeking re-election for a sixth term.

The popular Democratic mayor planned an announcement for 4 p.m. Thursday at Faneuil Hall.

A person with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed Menino's decision not to see re-election in November to The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person wasn't authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The 70-year-old was re-elected to a fifth four-year term in 2009. He has recently faced a series of health problems but has remained popular with voters.

Menino was hospitalized for eight weeks in the fall after a respiratory infection and a blood clot that was complicated by a spinal fracture and diabetes.

His decision not to run for office again is expected to trigger a political scramble to replace him as a new generation of political figures eye the mayor's office.

City Councilor John Connolly announced his mayoral intentions last month, regardless of Menino's decision. But Menino had been considered a heavy favorite had he opted to run.

As recently as January, Menino delivered an upbeat assessment of the city during his annual state of the city address.

Menino used a cane to walk to the podium and spoke vigorously about his plans for Boston. At the time, Menino gave no indication of whether he'd decided to seek a sixth term this year.

"Our progress is real. Our future is bright. The state of our city is striking, sound and strong," he said in prepared remarks that cited progress on economic development and crime reduction.

On Tuesday, Menino appeared at a rally at Boston City Hall plaza to urge the U.S. Supreme Court to repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act. The previous day, he delivered a speech to the Boston Municipal Research Bureau in which he said he had never been more confident about the city and announced several new development projects and initiatives.

Menino became acting mayor after his predecessor, Raymond Flynn, left office in 1993 after being named ambassador to the Vatican. Menino, then president of the City Council, was automatically elevated to the mayor's job.

The circumstances prompted some critics to label him the "accidental mayor," a charge the sometimes-thin-skinned Menino was quick to reject. But he was elected mayor in his own right in November 1993 and won re-election by wide margins in 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2009.

The city's previous longest serving mayor, the late Kevin White, was in office for four terms, from 1968 to 1984.

Menino's longevity also exceeded the legendary Mayor James Michael Curley, who also served four terms, but not consecutively.

Menino built his reputation by focusing on the unglamorous nuts and bolts of running a major metropolitan city ? fixing potholes, cleaning streets, even curbing the practice of saving a shoveled-out parking space by putting folding chairs or trash cans along the curb.

It's everyday commitments like those that earned him the nickname of the "Urban Mechanic."

The 2004 Democratic National Convention put Menino's political and negotiating skills to the test when the city's main police union threatened to picket over an unresolved contract.

It was only with the last minute help of other politicians, including Republican Gov. Mitt Romney, that a contract was reached in the early morning hours the day before the convention opened in the city.

During his years in office, Menino also became a vigorous national voice in favor of stricter gun control measures.

He co-founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and criticized the National Rifle Association's call for more armed guards at schools after the Connecticut school shooting in December.

"That is crazy," Menino said. "Every victim of gun violence and their families knows that's crazy."

Menino also built a reputation for creating an impressive political machine that handily defeated challengers.

Last year, Menino also played a crucial role in helping elect U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, campaigning with her at stops across the city.

Lemur lookalikes are two new species, DNA says

Mar. 26, 2013 ? Scientists have identified two new species of mouse lemur, the saucer-eyed, teacup-sized primates native to the African island of Madagascar.

The new study brings the number of recognized mouse lemur species to 20, making them the most diverse group of lemurs known. But because these shy, nocturnal primates look so much alike, it's only possible to tell them apart with genetic sequencing.

The new mouse lemurs weigh 2.5 to 3 ounces (about 65 to 85 grams) and have grey-brown fur. "You can't really tell them apart just looking at them through binoculars in the rainforest," said senior author Peter Kappeler of the German Primate Center in Goettingen, who earned his PhD at Duke in 1992.

The researchers named one of the new species the Anosy mouse lemur, or Microcebus tanosi. Anosy mouse lemurs are close neighbors with grey mouse lemurs and grey-brown mouse lemurs, but the genetic data indicate they don't interbreed.

The researchers named the other new species the Marohita mouse lemur, or Microcebus marohita, after the forest where it was found. In Malagasy, the word "marohita" means "many views."

"Despite its species' name, this mouse lemur is threatened by ongoing habitat destruction, and 'many views' of its members are unlikely," the researchers write.

The two new species were first captured by co-author Rodin Rasoloarison of the University of Antananarivo in Madagascar during trips to the eastern part of the country in 2003 and 2007. Rasoloarison weighed and measured them and took tiny skin samples for genetic analysis in the lab.

Co-authors Anne Yoder and Dave Weisrock, both at Duke University at the time, analyzed two mitochondrial and four nuclear DNA genes to figure out where the animals fit into the lemur family tree. Their genetic analyses were published in 2010, but this is the first time the species have been formally named and described.

Funded by a grant from the German Research Foundation, the study is published in the March 26 online issue of the International Journal of Primatology.

During a 2012 return trip to the forest where the Marohita mouse lemur lives, Rasoloarison discovered that much of the lemur's forest home had been cleared since his first visit in 2003. The state of the lemur's habitat prompted the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to classify the new species as "endangered" even before it was formally described.

"This species is a prime example of the current state of many other lemur species," Kappeler said. Mouse lemurs have lived in Madagascar for 7 to 10 million years. But since humans arrived on the island some 2,500 years ago, logging and slash and burn agriculture have taken their toll on the forests where these tree-dwelling primates live.

Only 10 percent of Madagascar's original forests remain today, which makes lemurs the most endangered mammals in the world according to the IUCN.

"Knowing exactly how many species we have is essential for determining which areas to target for conservation," Kappeler said.

A better understanding of mouse lemur diversity could help humans too. Mouse lemurs are a closer genetic match to humans than mice and rats, the most common lab animals. At least one species -- the grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) -- develops a neurological disease that is strikingly similar to human Alzheimer's, so the animals are considered important models for understanding the aging brain.

"But before we can say whether a particular genetic variant in mouse lemurs is associated with Alzheimer's, we need to know whether that variant is specific to all mouse lemurs or just select species," said Lemur Center Director Anne Yoder.

"Every new mouse lemur species that we sample in the wild will help researchers put the genetic diversity we see in grey mouse lemurs in a broader context," she said.

The HP ENVY 120 e-All-in-One Printer stands alone as virtually its own category of inkjet?at least, if you don't count earlier models, like the HP ENVY 110 e-All-in-One Printer that it's in the process of replacing. The one-word description of the category: stylish. If your home office is in a corner of your family room, and you want a printer that your interior decorator would approve of, the ENVY 120 is probably it. Whether it's worth the price, however, depends on how much you value good looks.

From a quick glance, The ENVY 120 could pass for a nicely designed, if slightly oversized, Blu-ray player. When it's off, it's simply a rectangular box, measuring 4.3 by 16.9 by 13.2 inches, made mostly of black plastic. There are no visible paper trays, no front panel buttons, and no other visual clues?aside from some easy to overlook text on the bottom front?to give away the fact that it's a multifunction printer (MFP).

Get a little closer and you can see a glass panel on the top, which happens to be a see-through lid for the letter-size flatbed scanner. Unless you've already seen that kind of scanner before, however, you probably wouldn't recognize it as one.

When you turn the printer on, by tapping on the touch-sensitive power icon, the 4.3-inch color touch screen on the front panel lights up to show some pretty icons including two labeled Scan and Copy. In addition, almost the entire front section of the printer opens up to about a 45-degree angle (which you can adjust manually if you care to). But there's still no visible input or output tray.

Only when you actually print something does the ENVY 120 reveal itself as a printer, automatically closing the front panel lid, then opening it to 90 degrees, and swinging out an arm in front of the printer to catch the pages coming out. When you take the pages off the arm, it then rotates the arm back into the printer, and partially closes the front lid again.

If you feel around under the lid, you'll find the paper drawer, which works like a DVD tray. There's even a touch-sensitive eject button you can use to tell the printer to move the front lid out of the way and eject the tray. You can then fill it with paper, touch the button again to close the tray, or push the tray in just a little, and let the printer grab it and take it the rest of the way.

Unfortunately, although these snazzy features add to the cost, they don't do anything for printing or for other basic MFP capabilities. That leaves the basics for the ENVY 120 comparable to what you'll find in much less expensive printers.

Basics
In addition to standard printing, copying, and scanning, the ENVY 120 lets you print from and scan to memory cards and USB memory keys, as well as preview images on its LCD before printing. It also supports HP's Web apps and printing through the cloud. However it offers only Wi-Fi for a network connection, which means you can't use the Web-related features unless you have Wi-Fi on your network. Partially making up for that is support for Wireless Direct (HP's version of Wi-Fi direct), which means that if you don't have Wi-Fi on your network, you can still connect directly to the printer by Wi-Fi to print from a phone or tablet.

Paper handling is a mixed bag. On the plus side, the printer offers automatic duplexing (for printing on both sides of a page) as a highly welcome extra. However, the 80-sheet input tray limits the printer to light-duty printing at best even by home or home-office standards. And unlike most printers, the ENVY 120 is limited to a maximum of letter-size paper, which means that if you ever wind up needing to print at legal size, you can't. As is typical for printers aimed primarily for home use, there's no automatic document feeder to supplement the letter-size flatbed.

Setup, Speed, and Output Quality
For my tests, I connected the ENVY 120 to a Windows Vista system by USB cable. Setup was standard for an inkjet. Print speed, unfortunately, was notably slow for the price. I timed the printer (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at just 2.1 pages per minute (ppm), the same speed as the much less expensive Canon Pixma MX522 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer and slower than the Editors' Choice Canon Pixma MX922 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer, at 2.4 ppm.

Print speed for photos is also on the slow side, at an average of 2 minutes 2 seconds for a 4 by 6. That makes it a little faster than the MX522, but significantly slower than the MX922, at 1:05.

Output quality is a little below par overall, mostly because the text is a step below the range that includes the majority of inkjet printers. Most people would consider it good enough for day-to-day business, home, or school needs. However, it's not suitable if you have an unusual need for small fonts or need the kind of crisp output that helps you make an impression of being fully professional.

Graphics output is absolutely par quality, making it suitable for almost any home need and most internal business needs. Depending on your level of perfectionism, you may or may not consider it good enough for PowerPoint handouts and the like. Photo quality is roughly equivalent to what you would expect from drugstore prints.

As should be clear, the HP ENVY 120 e-All-in-One Printer is a little like a high-priced restaurant dish with great presentation but merely adequate taste. The Canon Pixma MX922, for one, will give you a lot more capability at a lower price. But if you must have a printer that looks like a stylish consumer-electronics device, the HP ENVY 120 e-All-in-One Printer may be the only inkjet that fits the description. And that may be enough to make it your preferred choice.
