Ford Engineer Designs Vibrating Shift Knob

Vibrating-Shift

Figuring out how to properly drive a manual requires finesses, but most of all patience, and one junior engineer at Ford is trying to make it a little easier.

Zach Nelson has designed a vibrating shift knob that provides feedback when it is time to shift. The knob is hooked up to an iPad, which puts Ford?s open source OpenXC software to use, feeding the device with all sorts of real time data. Using the RPMs, the knob can be programmed to vibrate at whatever point is optimal for shifting.

?The vibrating knob can be installed onto the stock shift lever, and I?ve tested it on several vehicles including Mustang and Focus ST,? Nelson said. ?I decided to have a little fun with it and installed an LED display on top that shows the gear position.?

This shows Ford?s open source software is being put to use in interesting ways, and has the potential for many more applications.

Protests after Tunisian opposition leader killed

Zoubeir Souissi / Reuters

People walk beside the ambulance carrying the body of assassinated Tunisian opposition politician Mohamed Brahmi in Tunis Thursday.

By Bouazza Ben Bouazza and Paul Schemm, Reuters

Angry anti-government demonstrations broke out Thursday across Tunisia after gunmen killed the leader of a leftist opposition party, raising fears of new chaos on the difficult road to democracy in the cradle of the Arab Spring.?

Just five months after a similar assassination plunged the country into crisis, two gunmen shot Mohammed Brahmi, leader of the Popular Current party, in his car outside his home.?

Tunisia is struggling after overthrowing dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011. Many Tunisians are fed up with the government led by the moderate Islamist ruling party, Ennahda, which appears unable to handle a faltering economy, address popular unrest over unmet expectations and crack down on a rising extremist Islamist movement.?

Fethi Belaid / AFP - Getty Images

Tunisian opposition figure Mohamed Brahmi , seen in October 2012, was shot dead after he went outside following a phone call, his wife said.

Protesters immediately blamed the latest killing on the government. Soon after news broke, crowds gathered outside the Interior Ministry in the heart of Tunis calling for its downfall.?

There were also demonstrations around the country, including in Sidi Bouzid, Brahmi's impoverished home town and the birthplace of the country's revolution. Crowds in the nearby town of Meknassi burned down the local headquarters of Ennahda, which rules in a coalition with two secular parties.?

The Popular Front coalition of leftist parties that included Brahmi's called for "civil disobedience in all locations of the country until the fall of the governing coalition."?

The country's largest trade unions called for a general strike Friday that will shutter the government, public transportation and most shops freeing people up for what are expected to be large anti-government protests.?

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for Brahmi's killing. The two attackers sped off on a moped, according to a neighbor cited by the state news agency. Local media reported Brahmi was shot 11 times and his daughter witnessed his killing.?

The killing immediately brought to mind the assassination of Chokri Belaid, also a member of the Popular Front coalition, who was killed in his car outside his home in February.?

Many members of Belaid's party hold the government responsible for his assassination, believing it either turned a blind eye to Islamist extremists or actively used them to target their opponents. The government has blamed Belaid's assassination on Islamist militants and said that six suspects are still on the run and their names will soon be revealed.?

Belaid's death prompted nationwide demonstrations and the resignation of the prime minister. The latest killing is threatening to plunge Tunisia back into the same kind of crisis.?

"This day signifies the death of the democratic process in Tunisia," Nejib Chebbi of the liberal opposition Jomhouri (Republican) Party told local radio. "The government must leave."?

Crowds gathered outside the hospital in a suburb of Tunis where Brahmi's body was laid out after he was shot. They then swarmed the ambulance taking it away for the official autopsy.?

The Ennahda Party, which dominated legislative elections in October 2011, could be severely weakened by the latest assassination, experts said.?

"This is really going to put Ennahda on the spot right now," said Laryssa Chomiak, director of the Tunis-based Institute for Maghreb Studies. "The Tunisian public was not happy with the way in which the Chokri Belaid assassination investigation was dealt with... if they mess this up, I think it's going to be extremely bad for them, for their domestic support."?

The leader of Ennahda, Rachid Ghannouchi, told The Associated Press he was "very shocked" by the latest assassination, which comes just as the country needs stability to complete the new constitution and political transition.?

"Tunisia was getting ready to crown its efforts to complete its transition, it was the last candle still lit," he said, referring to other Arab countries that revolted against dictatorship, but have since known political instability. "The enemies of democracy want to snuff it out to enmesh Tunisia in the troubles found in the other countries of the Arab Spring."?

On July 3, Egypt's elected Islamist government was overthrown by a military coup ? an event closely watched by other Islamist parties that came to power in post-Arab Spring elections.?

The killing comes as Tunisia was celebrating the 56th anniversary of becoming a republic after gaining independence from France. Mustapha Ben Jaafar, the speaker of the national assembly in which Brahmi was a legislator, announced Friday would be a day of mourning.?

The new assassination comes as Tunisia's drawn-out transition approaches a milestone. The new constitution has been written and will be voted on in the coming weeks. Prime Minister Ali Larayedh promised on Monday that elections for a new president would be held before the end of the year.?

The U.S. State Department, the United Nations and Amnesty International called for an impartial investigation into the killings and for Tunisians to avoid reacting with violence.?

"I urge all actors in Tunisia ? government, opposition, the general public and civil society ? to stand firm and united in the face of political violence, and defend everyone's freedom to hold and express diverse political views," U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said.?

Ford Surveillance Mode Warns Police if People Approach Cruisers

    Ford Interceptor Alert

Ford is showing off a technology intended to alert police officers if someone tries to sneak up on their cruiser while they are sitting in their vehicles.

This "surveillance mode" uses a backup camera, cross-traffic alert, and reverse park assist, which continually monitor the back of police cars. A screen in the rear-view mirror displays the feed from the camera, and if someone approaches the vehicle from behind, an alert will sound, doors will lock, and the windows will roll up. It can be turned off in urban settings, where pedestrians would likely set off the system continually.

The system is the brainchild of Randy Freiburger, Ford police and ambulance fleet supervisor. "I can tell you from personal experience at night that officer security is a critical concern," Freiburger said in a statement. "Unfortunately, there are people with bad intentions who sneak up on police officers. This system builds upon the Ford Police Interceptor DNA that puts safety and security at the top of the list."

Ford's Police Interceptor program provides vehicles designed specifically for law enforcement.

In the demo video below, an officer explains how she's often in her car for seven out of eight hours per day on a slow day, and usually writes reports or monitors radar from her vehicle in less populated areas.

"Surveillance mode gives [police] an extra set of eyes to help guard against threats ? especially at night when visibility is compromised," Ford said.

California-based Intermotive developed the system, which can be installed at Ford's Crown facility in Chicago or at local upfitters by working directly with Intermotive. It will be available for the 2014 Ford Police Interceptor sedan and utility vehicle.

54 reported dead in central China earthquake

Chinese state media are reporting this morning that at least 75 people were killed and nearly 300 injured after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake shook western China.

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck central China on Monday, reportedly killing at least 75 people and collapsing many homes.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit in Gansu province about eight miles east of Chabu at 7:45 a.m. Beijing time (7:45 p.m. ET Sunday). The USGS recorded it at 6 miles deep and said it caused shaking in a rural region where the infrastructure isn't seismically resistant.

State news agency Xinhua said the death toll had risen to 75. It put the number of people injured at 600.?

    China Daily via Reuters

A man gives water to an injured woman after an earthquake hit Minxian county in China's Gansu province on Monday.

Photos posted on Chinese social media showed roads on the sides of riverbanks that had subsided and farmhouses reduced to piles of red bricks, Reuters reported.

"Many have been injured by collapsed houses," a doctor surnamed Du told Reuters.

The official China Meteorological Administration warned that heavy rain was possible in southeastern Gansu province Monday night and into Tuesday. It said the rain could hamper rescue efforts and urged residents to be alert to flash flooding in areas damaged by the earthquake.

About 5,600 residential buildings were damaged, the Beijing-based China Daily newspaper reported Monday afternoon. Some train service was suspended, and hundreds of armed police were mobilized to repair a damaged part of the main highway linking Lanzhou, the provincial capital, to Minxian county, it reported.

    Bing Maps

Xinhua said the quake was felt in the neighboring cities of Dingxi, Longnan and Tianshui, as well as Lanzhou, more than 100 miles away. About 19,000 people live in the area that was subject to the strongest shaking, it said.

The quake was followed an hour and a half later by a 5.6-magnitude quake at about the same depth,?the USGS reported.

Based on the history of earthquakes of this size in rural China, there could be "significant casualties," the USGS said.

Gansu abuts Sichuan province, where a 6.6 quake in April killed 164 people and injured more than 6,700, China's worst quake in three years.

NBC News' Li Le, Sarah Burke and Alastair Jamieson contributed to this report.

Don't Let Your Home Become A Money Pit: Home Improvement Tips

Whether you have a lot of experience or not, doing repairs to a home can make your life improved. Home is where the heart is. The tips that follow will help you realize your home improvement goals.

When you have to have your roof redone, use light colored substances or white tile. By using a lighter color you can reduce the amount of heat absorbed into your attic. This can save you quite a bit on your power bill.

Buying a microwave built for over-the-range installation can free up a little valuable counter-top real estate in your kitchen. Microwaves that replace the range hood come in different prices, and some of them have special features, like convection cooking. These models use a recirculating filter, making them ideal for use at home or in settings outside professional kitchens.

If expense is a factor, consider vinyl tiles instead of ceramic or stone. Vinyl is durable, water resistant and strong. It is also easy to install because it contains adhesive on its back. Vinyl floor can be bought as a set or sheet that covers the whole floor.

Purchasing a full set of metal fixtures is one way to quickly uplift a bathroom?s look. It is possible to find a wide range of shower curtain rods, cabinetry pulls and towel racks to suit almost any taste. These items can be purchased in coordinating sets as well as individually.

If you should happen to spot a water leaking from below the sink or under the tap, it is best that you do not try to patch up the leak yourself. Put a large container under the leak to catch the water and call a plumber.

If you are thinking about buying a home, be sure to look at the ceilings, the decks and the paint job for signs of water damage. Things like roof defects, bad ventilation, or other hidden problems can be located by professional inspectors. Therefore, whenever you are purchasing a new home, you should spend money on home inspection to ensure there is nothing wrong with it. Doing this might save you a bunch of money down the road.

Bold prints will certainly liven up any space. Look for accessories or furniture with zebra or leopard prints to create an interesting motive.

If you?re a homeowner, never hire an unlicensed contractor for work around your house. There are laws and regulations in every state for building contractors. Of course, this doesn?t mean your contractor is competent, but is does show that he has the proper credentials. Contractors without the right licenses probably don?t have professional insurance, which means that working with them is risky.

When thinking of replacing your cabinets, try using wood cabinets. They wear well and are quite strong. The most common wood types for cabinets are oak, cherry and maple. These can also be painted or stained, it is simple to re-stain them as well.

Making your home a better place will help you have pride in it and yourself. No one wishes for a house that desperately needs to be fixed. The advice given above should assist you in improving your home?s condition so that you?ll enjoy residing in it.

Japan's Aso welcomes Chinese move on bank rates

China's relaxing of controls on bank lending rates is a step in the right direction, Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso said on Friday.

The move gives commercial banks the freedom to compete for borrowers, which the People's Bank of China said will help lower financial costs for companies and marks a long-awaited step along the road of market-oriented reform.

Group of 20 nations are pressing China to encourage domestic demand-driven growth and allow greater exchange-rate flexibility as part of wider efforts to rebalance the global economy

"(China) is taking a step in the right direction," Aso told reporters after a working dinner of G20 finance ministers and central bankers in Moscow.

Aso told his fellow policymakers that Tokyo was determined to implement debt consolidation measures over time and that its massive fiscal and monetary stimulus, aimed to galvanise growth and end years of deflation, would have benefits for the entire world economy.

"I told G20 that we will firmly implement growth strategy and we are determined to steadily tackle fiscal consolidation including our international pledge made at G20 of halving the primary budget deficit by fiscal year 2015," Aso said.

Yawn?and this coffee maker is on

This coffee machine brews a fresh cup of joe whenever it senses that you are yawning. Sure, it's a marketing stunt by Douwe Egberts, the international coffee giant; but it's a really smart marketing stunt, which cleverly capitalizes on readily-available Kinect technology. The vending machine uses facial recognition and, when it captures someone in front of the machine yawning, it dispenses free coffee.

Of course, if you really wanted coffee, you could just pretend to yawn and trick the machine into doling out a free cup. Such are the benefits of humans being smarter than machines (for now!).

Watch the auto-brewing, caffeine-dispensing machine below.

Senators call on Obama to act over Cuban arms shipment to North Korea

    Arnulfo Franco / AP

Investigators look inside a recently opened container holding military equipment aboard the North Korean-flagged freighter Chong Chon Gang in Colon City, Panama, Wednesday.

By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News

Leading Republican and Democrat senators called on President Barack Obama to act over a Cuban shipment of weapons and equipment to North Korea, as talks got under way about migration between the U.S. and Cuba.

A North Korean ship was stopped by Panama as it headed home with a cargo of rockets, missile parts and two Cold War-era fighter jets hidden among sacks of brown sugar.

United Nations sanctions ban the export of most military equipment to North Korea, though Havana said it was sending ?obsolete? hardware to be repaired and then returned to Cuba.

Sen. Robert Menendez, the Democrat who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement that the shipment was ?a grave violation of international treaties.?

?Weapons transfers from one communist regime to another hidden under sacks of sugar are not accidental occurrences, and reinforces the necessity that Cuba remain on the State Department?s list of countries that sponsor state terrorism,? he said.

A ship stocked with weapons and missiles was intercepted near the Panama Canal traveling from Cuba to North Korea.

?In addition to possible violations of Panamanian law, the shipment almost certainly violated United Nations Security Council sanctions on shipments of weapons to North Korea and as such, I call on the Obama administration to submit this case to the U.N. Security Council for review,? he added.

Sen. Marco Rubio, who gave the Republican response to Obama?s State of the Union address this year and is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry that the discovery of the shipment should ?finally prompt the administration to re-calibrate its misguided and na?ve Cuba policy.?

He said the U.S. should ?immediately reverse its January 2011 decision easing restrictions on people-to-people travel and remittances sent to Cuba; as well as immediately halt granting visas to Cuban government officials.?

Rubio said Cuba?s actions were a ?flagrant violation? of U.N. sanctions and ?the latest reminder of the true nature of the Cuban regime.?

?I urge the Administration to take meaningful action to send a clear message that Cuban collusion with North Korea to undermine the international nonproliferation system carries heavy consequences,? he said.

Like Menendez, he also said the U.S. should raise the matter at the U.N. Security Council.

Both Rubio and Menendez are Cuban-Americans known as tough critics of Cuba's communist government.

Their comments, on Wednesday, came as Cuba?s delegation to Washington issued a statement saying talks with their U.S. counterparts took place in a ?climate of respect.?

?A review was made of the evolution of the migration accords in force between the two countries and the main results of the individual and joint actions undertaken by the Parties to cope with illegal migration and alien smuggling,? the Cuban statement said.

It said also Cuba had ratified protocols to prevent people trafficking and smuggling of migrants.

U.S. officials said that they had used the meeting to again press Cuba to release jailed American contractor Alan Gross.

Gross is serving a 15-year sentence for installing Internet networks for Cuban Jews as part of a U.S. program that Cuba considers subversive.

Gross' arrest in late 2009 and sentencing in March 2011 halted a brief thaw in U.S.-Cuba relations after Obama took office in January 2009.

U.S. officials have said they plan to raise the issue of the weapons shipment to Cuba soon.

Meanwhile, international vessel tracking monitor IHS Fairplay said that it had established that five North Korean cargo ships had made similar journeys since 2010, including the O Un Chong Nyon Ho, which docked in Havana, Cuba, in May last year.

Human Rights and Communications Surveillance | Electronic ...

    plaatje-christopher-human-rights

Electronic Frontiers Australia this week signed onto the International Principles of the Application of Human Rights to Communications Surveillance, a set of international due process principles designed to protect privacy in the face of government surveillance. The 13 point statement of principles is intended to explain how existing human rights standards, international law and jurisprudence should apply to the new capabilities and risks of digital surveillance.

The principles express the need for greater transparency in the use of surveillance by states, and call for users to be notified of a decision to access their communications and given the opportunity for appeal. They propose criminalising illegal communications surveillance by public and private parties, and state that service providers should not be compelled to build surveillance or monitoring capabilities into their systems.

To be launched in September, the document hopes to give ?governments, activists and legislators the language and references to re-think and reform how they defend privacy?. It comes at a time when state surveillance of citizens has come under increased scrutiny following revelations of the US? PRISM mass surveillance program.

More than at any time in history, citizens around the world are being exposed to intrusive surveillance and data collection, often without their knowledge or consent. EFA is proud to join the Electronic Frontier Foundation and 28 other civil society groups in supporting these principles.

Compromise would restore lower college loan rates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A compromise deal on student loans that could hold down loan rates in the short term was expected to come to a vote next week, well before students returning to campus this fall have to sign their loan agreements.

While the deal could lower rates for students and parents over the next few years, it could spell higher rates as the economy improves.

The Senate deal pegs the interest rates on new loans to the financial markets. Under the deal, undergraduates this fall could borrow at a 3.9 percent interest rate. Graduate students would have access to loans at 5.4 percent, and parents would be able to borrow at 6.4 percent. Those rates would climb as the economy improves and it becomes more expensive for the government to borrow money.

The compromise undoes the doubling of rates on some student loans that took hold on July 1, and one analysis of the Senate deal suggests incoming freshmen would save more than $3,300 in interest.

"We have gone through weeks of negotiations and we have an agreement," said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.

At the White House, spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama was "glad to see that a compromise seems to be coming together."

And Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said students benefited: "For every one of them, the interest rates on their loans will be lower."

At least for now. The compromise could be a good deal for students through the 2015 academic year, but then interest rates are expected to climb above where they were when students left campus in the spring.

Even in announcing the compromise, it was clear the negotiations were dicey.

"While this is not the agreement any of us would have written, and many of us would like to have seen something quite different, I believe that we have come a very long way on reaching common ground," Durbin told reporters.

Moments later, Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said he would revisit the whole agreement this fall, when his panel takes up a rewrite of the Higher Education Act. Harkin did little to hide his unhappiness with the compromise, but said there were few options to avoid a costly hike on students returning to campus this fall.

As part of the compromise, Democrats won a protection for students that capped rates at a maximum 8.25 percent for undergraduates. Graduate students would not pay rates higher than 9.5 percent, and parents' rates would top out at 10.5 percent.

Using Congressional Budget Office estimates, rates would not reach those limits in the next 10 years.

Lawmakers engaged in near-constant work to undo a rate hike that took hold for subsidized Stafford loans on July 1. Rates for new subsidized Stafford loans doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

On Wednesday, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau estimated outstanding student debt at $1.2 trillion ? up 20 percent in just two years. Student loans are now the largest form of consumer debt behind mortgages.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates 21 million loans would be issued in 2013. Students often take a combination of subsidized and unsubsidized loans to pay for their education.

The rapid growth in debt is raising alarm among experts, and there is growing evidence student debt is weighing down the economy ? for instance, by delaying the ability of young graduates to buy homes.

The increase follows the jump in the cost of higher education.

The tuition sticker price at public four-year colleges is up 27 percent beyond overall inflation over the last five years, according to the latest figures from the College Board. This past year it rose nearly 5 percent to an annual average of $8,655 nationwide.

Only about one-third of full-time students pay that published price, and the average net price ? what the average student does pay after grants, scholarships, loans and federal tax credits and deductions ? is just $2,910 for a year of studies. But net prices have been rising, too, and tuition is just part of the cost of college. Including room and board, the average annual sticker price at public colleges is now $17,860, and students pay on average $12,110.

At private four-year colleges, the annual average full tuition price is now just under $40,000, with the average student paying $23,840.

The bipartisan student loan compromise closely hews to what House Republicans passed earlier this year. Both Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican House Speaker John Boehner suggested the outlines of the proposal were acceptable to the GOP rank-and-file members who have pushed for a link between interest rates and the financial markets.

Even House Democrats who opposed the GOP-led deal there appeared ready to go along.

"I'm encouraged that bipartisan efforts continue in the Senate to reverse the student loan interest rate hike," said Rep. George Miller, the top Democrat on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Few students had borrowed for fall classes. Students typically do not sign loans until just before they return to campus, and lawmakers have until the August recess to restore the lower rates. The students who had borrowed for summer programs since July 1 would have their rates retroactively reduced.

The deal was estimated to reduce the deficit by $715 million over the next decade.

Comic-Con kicks off in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The zombies, superheroes, space aliens, pirates and time travelers taking over the streets of downtown San Diego can only mean one thing: Comic-Con is here.

The 44th annual pop-culture extravaganza kicked off Wednesday with preview night, which grants early access to the show floor to attendees with four-day passes.

Lines snaked around outside and inside the San Diego Convention Center with guests queuing to collect freebies and have first crack at such limited-edition collectibles as a 2-foot-tall "Transformers" action figure.

Some fans began camping out on the grass near the convention center to be among the first in line for Thursday's presentations for TV shows such as "Dexter" and films like "Divergent."

    Comic-Con continues through Sunday.

Housing starts fall to ten-month low

    By Lucia Mutikani

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. housing starts and permits for future home construction unexpectedly fell in June, offering further evidence of a sharp slowdown in economic activity in the second quarter.

The Commerce Department said on Wednesday housing starts dropped 9.9 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 836,000 units. That was the lowest level since August last year.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected groundbreaking to rise to a 959,000-unit rate last month. June's drop unwound the prior month's gains, suggesting a smaller boost from residential construction to second-quarter gross domestic product growth.

Permits to build homes fell 7.5 percent last month to a 911,000-unit pace. Economists had expected them to rise to a 1-million unit pace.

Data including retail sales, trade and inventories indicate the economy lost considerable momentum in the last quarter, with growth estimates as low as 0.5 percent.

The economy, which grew at a 1.8 percent annual pace in the first quarter has been hit by tighter fiscal policy and slowing global demand. Housing has been providing some buffer against those headwinds.

Despite the unexpected drop in groundbreaking and permits last month, there was little in the report to suggest the housing recovery in unraveling as the volatile multi-family segment accounted for much of the decline.

Sentiment among single-family home builders hit a 7-1/2 year high in July, a report showed on Monday, amid optimism over current and future home sales. But many builders have been complaining about a shortage of labor and materials, which may have contributed to last month's surprise decline in activity.

"We should see growth in single-family construction into 2014. That's positive for housing, jobs and overall growth," said Gus Faucher, senior macroeconomist at PNC Financial Services in Pittsburgh.

Last month, groundbreaking for single-family homes, the largest segment of the market, slipped 0.8 percent to a 591,000-unit pace, the lowest since November 2012. Starts for multi-family homes declined 26.2 percent to a 245,000-unit rate.

Permits for multi-family homes fell 21.4 percent to a 287,000-unit rate. But permits for single-family homes rose 0.6 percent to a 624,000-unit pace, the highest since May 2008.

Housing's recovery is being aided by still-low mortgage rates engineered by the Federal Reserve's accommodative monetary policy and steady employment gains.

While mortgage rates have spiked in recent weeks after the Fed expressed its desire to start cutting back on its bond purchases later this year, economists do not believe that this will derail the housing recovery. The monthly $85 billion in bond purchases have been holding down interest rates.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said on Wednesday the central bank still expected to start scaling back its massive asset purchase program later this year, but left open the option of changing that plan in either direction if the economic outlook shifted.

Rumoured Sony ?Honami? handset to sport 20MP camera

Sony is believed to be unveiling a new handset, codenamed ?i1 Honami?, at IFA in Germany in September this year. The phone, which will likely be a new addition to the Xperia line, has apparently had specifications leak already and one of those specs is a 20 megapixel camera option.

One source claims that the handset will be using a?1/2.3-inch 20.7-megapixel ExmorRS sensor, putting Sony?s phone in the same range as several models of budget point-and-shoot camera. This could see the phone competing with the likes of Samsung?s Galaxy Zoom or one of Nokia?s frankly bonkers photography phones.

The rest of the specs are impressive enough, putting the unnamed handset on a par with Sony?s Xperia Z Ultra for the most part. The display is said to be a 5-inch 1080p Triluminos screen, with Qualcomm?s Snapdragon 800 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a hefty 3000mAh battery making up most of the gadgetry powering the phone. Honami is expected to be dust and waterproof as well.

Microsoft releases OWA for iPhone and iPad

Microsoft has released OWA for iPhone and iPad, letting users access their Outlook email, calendars, and contacts. These apps are enhanced versions of the Outlook Web App, with added functionality for iOS devices, including voice actions and the ability to receive push notifications. The OWA apps also require that your mailbox has been updated to the latest version of Office 365 in order to work. Microsoft says that these apps aim to provide the same experience that users get on other platforms.

Our goal is to help our customers remain productive anytime, anywhere. This includes providing a great email experience on smartphones and tablets. Windows Phone 8 comes with a top-notch native email client in Outlook Mobile, and we offer Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), which is the de-facto industry standard for accessing Exchange email on mobile devices. In order to better support many of our customers who use their iPhones and iPads for work, we are introducing OWA for iPhone and OWA for iPad, which bring a native Outlook Web App experience to iOS devices!

The OWA apps for iOS are aimed at users working for companies with an Office 365 Business subscription of some kind, and as such, should not be downloaded by most users. But if you have been using the Outlook Web App, just waiting for a native solution, OWA for iPhone and iPad should provide the experience you're looking for. OWA for iPhone and OWA for iPad are separate apps, both available for free on the App store.

Since I'm not using Office 365, if you are, and you try OWA for iOS out, let me know how it works for you!

U.S. suggests Egyptian military averted civil war

By Noah Browning and Shadia Nasralla

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt avoided a possible civil war this month, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday, making it hard for Washington to conclude that the overthrow of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi was a military coup.

The armed forces deposed the elected leader on July 3 after huge street protests against his rule, clearing the way for the installment this week of a new interim cabinet charged with restoring civilian government and reviving the troubled economy.

Thousands of Mursi's supporters demonstrated outside the prime minister's office and marched through Cairo on Wednesday to denounce the military-backed administration and show that they had no intention of bowing to army dictates.

Crisis in Egypt, which straddles the vital Suez Canal, has alarmed allies in the West. Washington would be forced to cut off aid to Cairo, including some $1.3 billion that goes to the military, if it determined Mursi had been removed by a coup.

"On the issue of a coup, this is obviously an extremely complex and very difficult situation," Kerry told reporters during a visit to Jordan, where he held talks with Arab officials, adding that Washington would not "rush to judgment".

"What complicates it, obviously, is that you had (an) extraordinary situation in Egypt of life and death, of the potential of civil war and enormous violence, and you now have a constitutional process proceeding forward very rapidly."

His comments underscored grave U.S. concerns about the Arab world's most populous state and suggested that President Barack Obama was in no hurry to pull the plug on the aid program.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton became the latest senior international figure to visit Egypt's interim rulers and, unlike a U.S. envoy who came two days ago, she also met senior figures in Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood.

However, Brotherhood leader Amr Darrag said the Europeans had not put forward any plan to resolve the crisis. On her last visit, in April, Ashton attempted to persuade Mursi to sign up to a power-sharing deal brokered by an EU envoy. The president did not respond.

Thousands of Brotherhood supporters are staging a vigil in a square in northeast Cairo, vowing not to move until the restoration of Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected president. He has been held at an undisclosed location since his downfall.

A prosecutor on Wednesday ordered the detention of 70 Mursi backers for 15 days pending investigations over clashes that killed seven people early Tuesday, state news agency MENA said.

They are accused, among other crimes, of rioting, blocking a Cairo road bridge and targeting policemen with firearms.

    "PEACEFUL MARTYRDOM"

Wednesday's protests were mostly peaceful, although there were scuffles when a crowd marched through the city center and along the Nile riverbank, held back by riot police as they approached Tahrir Square, focus for anti-Mursi protests.

"We have only two goals, legitimacy or martyrdom," said Ahmed Ouda, 27. Another man interrupted to add: "Peaceful martyrdom!"

An interim cabinet of 33 ministers, mostly technocrats and liberals, was sworn in on Tuesday. Not one was drawn from the two main Islamist groups that together have won five elections since the 2011 uprising toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

In another worrying sign for the new government's ability to build consensus, the slate was also denounced by the April 6 youth group, which led early street protests against Mubarak.

"The cabinet included a number of ministers who failed before when they were holding former official posts along with another number of ministers who belong to the regime of ousted president Mubarak," the April 6 group said in a statement.

Ashton met interim head of state Adli Mansour, Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi and other government figures, telling reporters afterwards it was up to Egypt to choose its own path but that it should seek to reconcile feuding factions.

"I underlined the importance of a very inclusive process because this country belongs to everyone and they must feel part of that process," she said, calling for the release of Mursi.

The new cabinet is charged with implementing an army-backed "road map" to restore civilian rule, which foresees parliamentary elections in as little as six months.

Its main task is salvaging an economy wrecked by two and a half years of turmoil. For that, it has been given a lifeline of $12 billion in aid from rich Gulf Arab states.

Many of the new cabinet ministers are supporters of deep economic reforms demanded by the International Monetary Fund in return for a stalled rescue loan, but investors are skeptical those reforms will be implemented soon.

Finance Minister Ahmed Galal said on Wednesday that an IMF loan was only "part of the solution" to the country's problems.

"We need time to read and study the issues and files on the ground to come up with sound and well thought-out decisions that will pave the way and build the future for governments to come," he said in a statement.

    KIDNAPPED?

Mursi has not been seen in public since the army moved in and his supporters say he has been "kidnapped" - a charge denied by military spokesman Ahmed Mohamed Ali, who told Al Arabiya that the army had acted "for his protection".

Ali also accused the Brotherhood of "a campaign of incitement that attempts to depict political differences as religious differences". He said: "There is incitement to target military installations and headquarters, and this is something totally unacceptable in Egypt or in any country."

The running street battles in the early hours of Tuesday were the deadliest in a week. Before that, more than 90 people were killed in the first five days after Mursi's removal, more than half of them shot dead by troops outside a Cairo barracks.

In the lawless Sinai peninsula bordering Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip, a policeman was killed when gunmen opened fire on a police station in El-Arish city, security sources said.

Two security checkpoints in El-Arish airport were also attacked but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

At least 14 people, mainly security personnel, have been killed there since Islamist militants called for an uprising against Egypt's military after Mursi's exit.
