Apple's next-gen iPad mini likely won't gain Retina display until 2014. That's according to the latest knowledgeable supply chain chatter.
On Friday, China's Economic Daily News reported that the chances of a second-gen 7.9-inch tablet reaching consumers this year are slim to none. Corroborating earlier reports, shortages of the updated display panels are compelling Apple to push back the release until at least the first quarter of 2014.
Although Apple has a penchant for refreshing products at least once a year, it's possible that an 18-month gap could exist between iPad mini releases. This, of course, wouldn't be unprecedented in the enchanted realm of Apple. Let's not forget the comparable gap between releases of the iPhone 4 and the 4S model.
But as the holiday shopping season approaches, this might be bad news for Apple, given all the other small-tablet options on the market. Regardless of the rumors surrounding the iPad mini 2's release, we have been seeing photographic evidence and hearing chatter about Apple's preparatory legwork for the device ever since February of this year. So we know the update is on the way. As always, it's just a matter of time.Source: PC World
